FPS progress

Christopher Kitchen

Today I focused on how to develop the characters in the game, here are a few examples of what I've been working on: I have figured out how to create a functional first person character, along with finding a way to create a gun that actually shoots and causes damage. Additionally I found a good AI for the enemies from the physics platformer kit( Axel found good assets for the enemies). Then I also tried to get the gun to fit in the hitbox of the player to prevent the gun from going through walls(still working on it though).

I also had a lot of help from the instructors in doing all this.

Unfortunatly due to bugs in the game I'm not able to post any good example pictures.

Day 2 - Solidifying the Plot

Today my group and I worked on solidifying the details of our game. We decided that Cypher City would have four main quadrants as well as a city center in the middle. The game is going to involve some puzzle solving, such as finding a key to unlock a door, flipping a switch, etc. The four sectors will be Residential (main color is orange), Tech (main color is blue), Commercial (main color is yellow), and Medical (main color is pink). The city center will be very white. Today I began working on the three dimensional map of the city. I am going to create several blocks of city space, and then copy and paste the segments to combine to create a larger, explorable map. Today I tried to create a three dimensional model in Maya of the main character, M.A.B., although I got confused and I had no idea what to do, so now Evan is going to work on making the three dimensional model.

Day 2

Today our group mainly worked on the plot. We ended up changing our plot completely four or five times. We also figured out a sort of division of labor. Chris is working more on game mechanics, Axel on game design, and I am working on the plot line. We also worked a little bit more on Unity. Axel figured out that the only way to create rooms was to put a whole bunch of different boxes close together, Chris figured out how to turn a rd person shooter game into a 1st person shooter, and I rewrote our storyline several times. We also looked at some free assets we might use. There were some free boxes we might use, a cyborg (picture in story post) and a free first person shooter setup asset that turned out to be a scam. There are some more that Alex posted in the Resources tab.

Today, our group finished outlining the story. We set a rough sketch of what the story will look like, and added in a couple of plot twists. The basis of the game is that the aliens are being hunted down by robots, and the main character is sent by the aliens to destroy the robot leaders and foil any robot plans they come across. As well as the story, we started with our 3D models today. Our basic robot enemy is finished as well as the weapon the robots will be using.

Today, we fleshed out our ideas. We worked hard on our main character's personality traits and the ways he would behave in certain situations. Then we presented said ideas in front of the class. After the presentations, we worked in our groups on divvying up jobs. I started making the first level and continue to work on the opening track. Above is the first level I made. I worked on getting the lighting and shadowing perfect. To match the background, I tinted it with purple. I tried getting the camera in the best vantage point. Next, I will work on the are behind the building to make it look more inhabited. I also tried adding in fog but it looked crappy. I think I'll try looking at the premade fogs in the store, maybe there is a better looking one there? For the opening title soundtrack, I was thinking of a more atmospheric background with maybe some piano?? I will make sure it has a seamless loop.

Today we worked on the story behind our video game (see below).  It started pretty simply.  And we kept adding layers to make it more complex and challenging.  The cool part is that there are three different Alien species: ones that can crawl (they are just short really), aliens that can jump really high and aliens that can run really fast.  That means that you can get to the different levels of the game in three different ways.

It is also a platform game (not first person), like Mario, only 3D.  This makes it possible to make a lot of progress in two weeks.

Events of the Game

Once M.A.B. will be dropped in the city center, right outside the capitol building, M.A.B will find the door to the city's control panel is locked with a four letter passcode. The player will be told by Jason Ivey (the scientist) that there is one piece of the passcode in each sector of the city. The player has the choice to go to any of the four sectors of the city. The four sectors are residential, commercial, medical, and technological development. Each sector also has its own color that the background will have with many different neon lights. In addition, M.A.B.’s lights will switch to that sector's color as well. The colors of each sector are orange for residential, yellow for commercial, pink for medical, blue for tech, and white for central. M.A.B. will be sent through each sector going threw a few puzzles and such to find a letter, and will be guided by Jason Ivey and his own intuition due to having an A.I. implanted. Every sector will have around 5 puzzles that are the same type of puzzle that all need to be solved in order to receive that sector's part of the passcode. Once the player solves all puzzles in the four sectors and is now in the central sector, it will need to solve more puzzles to be able to put the passcode in. Eventually Leonard Cypher will also be patched into the communication with M.A.B. Leonard was the old mayor of The City of Cypher (Cypher is who the city was named after), as well as the owner of most of the cities factories and industries, and thus Jason's boss. After finishing all of the puzzles in the center tower, M.A.B. will make it to the room with the system that will make the atmosphere good for humans again. However there are two buttons. An orange one, that we are told by Cypher will clear up the atmosphere and put all of the factories back to work, and a blue one, that Jason says will restore the atmosphere, and destroy the majority of the tech and factories in the city, including M.A.B. Cypher encourages M.A.B. to press the orange button, but Jason says that if he does, they will soon just be back in the same position they are in now. He then suggests that M.A.B. presses the blue button, so that he can save humanity forever, not just for a few years but will sacrifice himself. It is then up to the player to decide which button to press which is the end of the game.

Story

Eli Levitt
1 / 2

You are a scientist at a military base researching human enhancements (think cyborg) for soldiers. You had just completed the final designs and were about to test them, when your base was attacked by a terrorist group that wants to use the plans to create an army and take over the world. They have taken the plans for the cyborg and killed your co-workers. The plans are scattered, with pieces in several different places. Luckily, you left a hidden self destruct button in the plans in case something went wrong, but you can't remember where it was. You must find the plans and remember the loophole before your enemies have a chance to build the cyborg and create an almost unstoppable soldier.

Game mechanics: We will have several different levels, and two mini-bosses, along with one main boss who will be the actual cyborg. Each place that has part of the plans will be a level.
