This Fall, San Francisco-based developer DivcoWest collaborated with NuVu on the design of a groundbreaking machine for the groundbreaking ceremony on October 19, 2017 for their new project in the NorthPoint area in East Cambridge, MA called "Cambridge Crossing (CX). As part of the "Groundbreaking Robots" studio lead by NuVu Coaches this past June, fourteen NuVu students worked on a concept and design for a groundbreaking robot. At the end of the studio, representatives from DivcoWest selected one winning design to be built full-scale and demoed at the groundbreaking ceremony.  The winning project was the "Groundbreaking Steampunk Bike."

The  Groundbreaking Steampunk Bike team spent four weeks in September and October fabricating the bike. NuVu student Teresa Lourie, one of the creators of the Groundbreaking Steampunk Bike explains, "The Groundbreaking Steampunk Bike is a fully-mechanical, bike-powered steampunk digger, which is designed to be ridden at the groundbreaking ceremony in October 2017.  Cambridge and Somerville are known for their large population of avid bikers, as well as their emphasis on sustainability and environmental conservation. The bike was designed to represent those values, and show that the NorthPoint development would share those interests and mesh well with the other neighborhoods in those cities."

DivcoWest invited 300 people to share in the official launch of Cambridge Common at the October 19 groundbreaking ceremony. Attendees included Cambridge Mayor E. Denise Simmons, Cambridge City Manager Lou DePasquale, and elected officials from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as well as DivcoWest's founder & CEO Stuart Shiff.

In Summer 2018, we will time-travel into the future to explore life on earth and outer space. We’ll imagine the spaces we’ll be inhibiting and use our predictions to design, engineer and build inventions to help us live sustainably, healthily and productively. This Summer 2018, our theme is Future Worlds and we’ll be exploring all these topics and more while working together to design meaningful solutions for the future!

Our Spring 2018 PreVu program has launched!

This Spring, we are beginning the fifth season of PreVu, our kids program for young innovators. In each Session, kids (ages 5-7) will be introduced to a real-world problem and use their creative problem solving, critical thinking and innovation skills to make and build solutions.

In honor of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, ON DISPLAY Global was performed at the McCormick Gallery at the Boston Architectural College on Sunday, December 3, 2018. ON DISPLAY by Heidi Latsky Dance is a deconstructed art exhibit/fashion show that raises questions about the body as spectacle and society’s obsession with body image. It transforms a cast of diverse and extreme bodies, some with disabilities, into a ‘sculpture court’ where the performers become living art. ON DISPLAY began as a simple human sculpture court and is now a movement, a growing portfolio of works that explores and demonstrates inclusion through art. The Boston performance of ON DISPLAY Global is a collaboration between KAIROS Dance, Transformative Culture Project and NuVu Studio. 

NuVu Students worked with local and New York-based dancers to design and fabricate wearable sculptures for the performance.

NuVu was awarded the 2018 AAIE (Association for the Advancement of International Education) Innovative Leadership Award. The award will be presented at the AAIE Conference in NYC.  As recipients of the award, we'll be giving a keynote address at AAIE. Thank you for all the support over the year. At Woodstock Union High School & Middle School, one of our NuVuX partners, students in the IDEA class are creating projects under the topic of "Design for Empathy." Lead by our NuVu Design and Technology Fellow, Dustin Brugmann, the studio course has students focused on creating devices that simulate the challenges that arise from concussions, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), ALS, and dyslexia, in order to gain more understanding around these conditions.

Our NuVuX partner, Episcopal School of Baton Rouge, had their first student exhibition of projects at the end of December for the NuVu Innovation Studio.  It was an amazing showcase of projects that ranged from interactive games for children with Cerebral Palsy to a safety fishing glove to a collapsible Hexaball for exercise and stress relief after a natural disaster. 

Over 100 student projects were exhibited at the Fall 2017 Innovation Studio Exhibition at our NuVuX partner school, All Saints Academy in Florida. The projects are part of NuVu's Innovation Studio which takes place each semester at ASA. High school students from across grades 9-12 participate in this hands-on studio to gain experience in the design process while solving real-world challenges.

Our first gallery exhibit will be launching on March 27, 2018 at Gallery 344 in Cambridge's City Hall Annex.  Titled In:Accessible, the exhibit examines ways to make our community more accessible and  potential connections that might allow people to transcend some of the barriers inhibiting full participation in society. The gallery exhibition-reception will be taking place from 6-8pm on March 27. This project is in collaboration with the Cambridge Arts Council.

In:Accessible, the new exhibition at Cambridge Arts’ Gallery 344, showcases projects created by students of NuVu Studio, a Central Square school where teens design and build solutions to real-world problems—like helping a teen in a wheelchair play basketball, creating a device to help a boy with  muscular dystrophy raise his hand in class, or helping a veteran who’s lost arms continue to practice archery.
