Police Brutality and Justice

By: Jaden Johnston and Mercy Schmidt

Police Brutality and Justice is a wearable designed to lead the viewers to start asking questions about gun-related violence. This project is intended to make the viewers feel uncomfortable and curious while looking at the piece. It is created to look like how an everyday student would dress, with harsh graphics across the outfit, representing that this problem occurs sporadically. This project’s main target is students of color, and its viewers target students and young adults. Throughout our piece, there is an intended placement of what each graphic represents.

PB&J’s outfit consists of a white t-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a jean jacket. On the t-shirt, it has handprints specifically placed where the police would touch the victim, as well as blood and bullet holes. The jeans have rips, bullet holes, blood dripping, and tears. The jean jacket has a policeman holding a gun pointing to the Black Lives Matter fist, along with the word Distrust across the back. Each of these graphics are powerful in the piece to represent and display how much police brutality affects people.

Craft, Crochet, Discuss

By Lalita B. & Gabe K.

Today's world is very fast-paced, and we are always getting constant information. Craft Crochet & Discuss, is a series of workshops that provides Nuvu students with a 3rd space. The goal is to give students a place to slow down and crochet as we discuss important and impactful topics going on in the world. We want to make the space relaxing and invite communication and collaboration. What we have created is a proof of concept, consisting of a T-shirt and jean jacket. On the T-shirt, you can see a decal and it's made up of symbols and drawings made by a few Nuvu students, The idea is to have something made by the community to then wear. With the jacket, the idea is for the students to learn how to make different stitches and patches that they can then add to or create different pieces of clothing.

Fashion Through Police Brutality

Reactivewear is a product that is centered around fighting the approval of the Willow Project and the environmental effects that will come with it. We wanted to link fashion with protesting the Willow Project because of the short-lived recognition it got on social media, despite it being a landmark decision that will create a dependency on fossil fuels for the United States. Our product will be a full-length piece of clothing made primarily out of trash bags. Our final draft of our project (which is not finished) will include eco-friendly trash bags that are made out of corn silk and less wasteful adhesives such as resin. The prototype that we currently have is made out of generic trash bags but will be the exact same size and style as our final draft.

The people who will be wearing this product will be protesters who would like to model by contacting the protest organizers. We will supply the entire costume to the protest, and we will try to highlight the way that the outfit may stand out by encouraging people to post it on social media. This will draw attention back to this cause and pressure lawmakers to reconsider their support. The message behind the veiling that you may see on the prototype is symbolism to how oil is shielding our future, and getting rid of this shield will only be possible by bringing down the Willow Project and its generation harm.
