This shoe is specifically designed for children between the ages of five to seven who have sensory Processing Disorder. The goal of this shoe is to make it easier and more comfortable for children to have and keep their shoes on. According to the National Library of Medicine, the developmental peak of Sensory Processing Disorder happens between ages three and seven.

When children are forced to put their uncomfortable shoes on to engage in activities that they like it makes said activities less joyful for the child. The main concern is that without shoes it is unsafe for children to participate in activities that they like, as well as the time it takes caregivers to get the child to put on and wear their shoes.  With this shoe, children are engaged in putting their shoes on and they can tighten the shoe to their personal liking. This shoe has bungee cord for the shoe laces that are stretchy and a hook on the back of the shoe to provide more security in the ankle.

Accessible shoes are shoes designed to support children in poverty in Andisabe, Madagascar. In Andisabe, the most common form of transportation is walking. The ground is acidic and walking barefoot risks injuries. The goal of this shoe is to endure constant wear and tear while staying practical and protecting children from injury. 75% of the Madagascar population lives on under $1.90 per day, the shoe needs to be inexpensive to truly be accessible. Accessible shoes will provide cheap durable shoes to the children of Madagascar, protecting them from bacterial infections and damaging their feet among other health issues.

Accessible shoes will provide the children of Andisabe with shoes that will last. Designed for children of any gender who are 5 - 14 years old, these shoes will pave the way for shoes that grow with the child. The shoes are designed to be durable, breathable, inexpensive, made with local materials, and to grow with the child. The shoe has a gap to allow for elastics to fit the shoe perfectly and for breathability. In order to minimize costs it is made with local materials including sugarcane, recycled fabric, and coffee grounds. It is reinforced in the places a shoe would usually wear down and has elastics in multiple places as well as inserts in the sole to create the perfect shoe for the user. Accessible shoes will make shoes truly accessible and beneficial to kids in Andisable.

Teo's Brief

Accessible shoes are shoes that target a younger audience of kids who are involved in child labor and their only way of travel is to walk. The target area would be a town in Madagascar called Andasibe. In Andasibe there are no paved concrete roads therefore driving and biking are not very popular. The ground is acidic and walking barefoot would cause skin damage. In all of Madagascar, the average daily wage is $5 therefore it takes longer to afford certain things like solid durable shoes that will last a long time.

Kids ages 8-12 in Madagascar struggle with being forced to walk everywhere and they need solid sustainable shoes that can grow with their feet as they get older. This shoe would be made out of durable, long lasting, and colorful material. The sole is able to extend with a spacer to allow for children to adjust the shoe as they grow.

Wyatts brief

Cleatys are a cheap and orthotic soccer cleat built for people who have flat feet and can't afford expensive cleats. Cleatys have many different colors and styles so you know you're gonna look great on the fields. They have a flat foot insole for anyone who can't get a custom molded insole professionally done. Normal soccer cleats are unnecessarily expensive and professional orthotic insoles are costly and can take weeks to manufacture.

Using special faux leather and moldable EVA foam, Cleats are just as beneficial as orthotic soccer cleats for less money. Regular orthotic insoles cost hundreds of dollars and are extremely hard and time-consuming to obtain. All Cleatys come with a DIY flat foot insole you can mold by yourself! All you have to do is blast it with a hair dryer or iron and keep your foot pressed on the high-quality EVA foam for five minutes and that's it!  According to a Gallup sports toll, soccer grows bigger every year, and soccer cleat prices have been skyrocketing recently.

The Fidget Shoe is a shoe specially designed to help kids with mental health issues. There are many different mental health issues, and all have serious impacts on people and make it harder to go about day-to-day life. This project aims to help children who are dealing with various mental disorders specifically, giving them a fidget tool and/or distraction to help them cope. Sensory processing disorders or ADHD are prevalent diagnoses, whether primary or coexisting with other mental health diagnoses. Both Associations for Children’s Mental Health and MentalHealth.gov provide research that shows that only 40% of students with emotional, behavioral, and mental health disorders graduate from high school, compared to the usual 76%. That is usually credited to the classroom environment making it harder to learn compared to other kids. The Fidget Shoe project was designed keeping this in mind. It is a customizable, slip-on sneaker that can change color and has multiple buttons and straps to press, squeeze, pull, and twist while learning.

Many different therapists and psychiatrists recommend fidget tools for day to day, citing many different sources and research articles about the positive effect it has on children. Fidget Toys make it easier for a child to calm down and focus, which boosts their results in school, which in turn makes them feel accomplished and more eager to learn. That’s why the Fidget Shoe would mostly used by elementary and middle schoolers. As most children at this age spend some of their days sitting inside learning, this would be giving them a tool to help cope with restlessness.

Jades Brief:

Cheap For Children is a project aiming to create cheap and protective boots for child farmers in the US. Cheap For Children specifically focuses on children's contact with pesticides, which can lead to growth defects and illness such as neurological disorders including autism and ADHD. According to the National Library of Medicine “Recent research suggests that even low levels of pesticide exposure can affect young children’s neurological and behavioral development.” Cheap For Children will provide families with a cheap boot to protect their children from pesticide exposure.

According to the NLM pesticides can cause harm through ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact. The Cheap For Children boot is a waterproof boot made from foam and Tyvec providing superior pesticide protection by preventing water flow in and out while also preventing moisture buildup with replaceable silica gel packets. Parents can finally provide their children with the safety they deserve without the high cost.

Victoria:

Sheild Shoe is a rainboot, working boot, PPE, and sports shoe all in one. The International Labor Organization states, that children that work in agriculture often are exposed to dangerous toxins. Children that live in rural settings may come in contact with environmental hazards from agricultural production activities. Sheild Shoe was designed to stop kids from being affected by pesticides.

The user is12-year-old females from hot southern states. Their guardian would benefit from our shoes by knowing that their daughter will no longer be in pain or at risk. The Sheild Shoe helps kids who are working in fields stay safer from chemicals, and allows children to be safe in all outdoor activities while being comfortable. The Sheild Shoe was made out of Tyvek, foam, silica gel packets, plastic, and thread. The Tyvek is a waterproof material that makes sure that water does on go into the shoe. The foam, silica gel packets, plastic, and thread all make the shoe more comfortable.

Holden:

The Viper Shoe is a shoe that is meant to prevent ankle sprains in children who play basketball on concrete. The shoe is meant to prevent injuries so that children don’t have to miss games/practices with sprained ankles when they could be playing and having fun with their friends. Research shows that shoes with more support in the ankle, both around the base and the top, can help prevent ankle sprains during athletic activity by keeping the foot and ankle stable. Shoes should also have a supportive sole so that the impact of running and jumping is distributed in a healthy and natural way for the foot. By using biomimicry, and imitating the scales on a fish or snake, the Viper Shoe is flexible but only to the extent that it is healthy for the ankles, and won’t tear ligaments.

The Viper Shoe helps children who want to be able to play basketball outside but are afraid of injury. The persona that was created, Rocco, is an eleven year old boy who only has access to concrete courts. He needs a shoe that is durable and supports his foot and ankle health. He needs the shoe to have a very cushioned and supportive sole as well as a high guard that goes above his ankle, and can hold it in place. The user would put on the shoe like normal, making sure to tie it tight enough to stay on, and would go about playing basketball like they normally do. The technology behind the project is the aspects of biomimicry, and all of the materials that go into cushioning the insole, including two different types of foam. As well as making sure the outsole is durable and has a lot of traction.

Sasha:

The Viper Shoe is a shoe specifically designed for ankle support and max movement on the court. The goal of the shoe is to prevent ankle sprains for kids who play basketball but might not have shoes with proper support. Studies show that low-top shoes don’t provide enough support, and more ankle injuries happen in them. The Viper Shoe is made with extra ankle support, an adjustable fastener, and a flexible sole to provide support.

The main concern for most basketball players is rolled ankles, sprained ankles, and just foot injuries in general. “Project name’ was curated for an 11-year-old client named Rocco who is afraid to sprain his ankle, but still wants to play his sport. With The Viper Shoe, Rocco doesn't need to worry about spraining his ankle, since the shoe is designed with extra cushion at the sole, an adjustable ankle strap, and stops just below the calf.

Grayson:

The Cloud Boot. The Cloud Boot is a shoe to help negate the damage caused by Lupus. This shoe was designed to allow people affected by Lupus to live an active lifestyle without concern. Lupus affects one point five million people in the US and one of its most severe side effects is a loss in bone density. Lupus causes loss of bone mineralization which can lead to a diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis; and due to its severe side effects, it causes many of the people affected to have to change their entire way of life to avoid fractures. Such as avoiding walking for too long and avoiding all physical contact. The Cloud Boot is designed so that it can try to negate these issues and allow the families of people affected and people affected by Lupus to not worry about their daily life.

The Cloud Boot* was designed for the persona of a fifteen-year-old girl named Kara so that she could continue to hike and go on long walks. It supports Kara’s active lifestyle by using a combination of a system built into the sole designed to reduce impact by cushioning the force with springs, strategically placed cushioning around the toes and heel, and straps that allow you to change where you want the pressure. With this shoe, people affected by Lupus can now go about their daily life and participate in low-impact activities without worrying about fractures in the feet.

Trey:

The Cloud Boot is a shoe designed for people diagnosed with Lupus, and helps them still to live an active life. This shoe reduces the force that the user’s foot is receiving when walking, and reduces injuries. This condition is estimated to have 16,000 new cases each year. With this disease, the immune system affects its own tissues, causing tissue damage in the affected organs.

Due to the lack of support in regular shoes, people with Lupus have to change their entire life style just to avoid any injuries or damages. This shoe was created for a persona, named Kara, a 15-year-old girl with lupus who enjoys taking hikes and long walks. This shoe helps Kara by having an ample amount of sole cushioning to reduce any contact that can happen in activities. There are also straps on the shoe that can be adjusted, so the force on the straps can be changed. The padding inside the shoe is made out of foam and the outside of the shoe is made out of foam sheets.

Final Review

10.26.22

The Foot Protector is a cheap, comfortable shoe for people with diabetic feet. It’s wide and takes pressure off of the foot while still possessing great aesthetics. Diabetic foot is caused by diabetes which can cause hair loss on the toes or feet, change in the size of feet, ulcers, and even loss of the sense of touch in the foot. 6% of people with diabetes have a diabetic foot. Depending on the shoe more ulcers can appear which can lead to infections and amputation.

The Foot Protector is designed for young adults from ages 22-26. Diabetic shoes are around $200 and many users cannot afford them. With The Foot Protector, users won’t have to pay as much and will still be comfortable. The sole of the Foot Protector has fewer pieces and the materials cost less. This greatly reduces the price. Additionally, the Foot Protector straps around the user's leg taking pressure off of the foot and putting it on the leg.

The Foot Protector is an inexpensive shoe that can help people with diabetic foot. If someone with a diabetic foot gets a blister and does not realize that they have one due to numbness, the blister can get much worse. Eventually, it could get to the point of needing amputation. The Project was made to provide a cheap way to avoid this. The National Center For Biotech Information states that anywhere from 15 to 25% of people with diabetes develop diabetic foot, and all those people are at risk of needing serious, expensive medical help.

The Foot Protector is designed for a user from the ages of 22-46 Instead of needing hospital visits, the user can purchase The Foot Protector for a much lower price and more convenience. Our design provides extra support on the sole, having a removable toe cap for heightened feelings and, and airflow holes. The extra support on the soles is a necessity for people with diabetic foot as it allows them to do more with less pain. When someone has diabetic foot they can have heightened senses in their toes, with the removable toe cap the user doesn’t have to experience agitation in their shoes. The reason for the airflow holes is that the foot changes shape and users would wear this more frequently than a normal shoe.

Ari's Brief:

Toes for Tots is a product designed to give dyspraxic users a way to protect their toes from injury caused by physical impacts. Toes for Tots is a product that utilizes a comfortable, custom safety toe that can be easily slipped inside of any shoe and worn comfortably for hours. According to the National Library of Medicine, broken toes make up nine percent of all broken bones. In order to decrease this figure Toes for Tots encourages the user to wear a safety toe to protect from impacts, damage and broken bones.

This is designed for children ages 7-11 who experience dyspraxia along with anyone else who would benefit from toe protection. The user takes a 3d scan of their foot and receives a custom thermoplastic covering ensuring comfort and protection at all times. The user avoids the extreme costs of steel-toed boots and can put the thermoplastic toe into any shoe. This allows the user the freedom to protect and express themselves in any shoe.

Bodhi's Brief:

Toes For Tots

Toes For Tots is a customizable foot guard to prevent broken and fractured toes which are incredibly prevalent in children (The Royal Children Hospital Melbourne). It was originally designed for kids with dyspraxia, a neurological impairment that reduces fine motor skills and puts a child's developing feet at great risk for injuries. However, it also works for any individual who wants some extra protection. The way it works is simple, just slide the plastic guard into the toe of any shoe and then slip the foot in. The custom fit sizing guarantees a comfortable and protective fit without disrupting the foot. This design also avoids the extreme triple-digit cost of steel-toed boots, is custom to every user, can be taken in and out with ease, and doesn't impact style because it can be used in any shoe.

Toes for Toes creates custom fit toe protectors via a 3D scan which customers take of their foot and upload to the website. The website then interprets the scan and makes a generalized 3d design of the front of the foot to give the shape without unnecessary specifics like individual toe size. That design is then printed and packaged with 4 plastic sheets and sent to the user. The user then heats the sheets and molds them over the 3d print. Once it is trimmed it can be inserted into the shoe and protected.

Amedeo's Project Brief
