Petit Décorer is a kit for preparing unique, decorative cakes. The kit contains various decorations and methods for preparing Petit Fours (bite-sized finger cakes), and is intended to be used by friends who want to have lighthearted fun with food.

WHEN: During the communal preparation, assembly, and consumption of food during a small get-together with friends. 

WHY/IMPACT: The goal is to create a memorable, cute experience between friends while promoting connection.

EMOTIONAL RESPONSE: It will accomplish this by creating an environment that is playful, charming, whimsical, and delightful. As well as giving the users a creative outlet that yields a reward you can enjoy with friends.

 The project “Breakfast Assistant” is designed to make a home cooked meal on-the-go. Its main function is to be able to make eggs, toast, or whatever the user chooses to make for breakfast, and to be stored in a small container, which makes it easier to bring in the car. This is designed to fit no larger than a piece of toast. The idea for the user is to cook the toast, then use the bread mold to form the eggs so it will perfectly fit, then to add whatever else desired, then store away using the lid, and the spatula. This product also contains a spatula which is used to scoop the breakfast up. Once the breakfast is fully assembled, the spatula wraps over the container for minimal space usage, as well as a strap to secure the meal inside.

Who: 

This gadget is intended to be for an on-the-go individual who intends to enjoy a good breakfast. It is directed towards people who are in a rush, and need something that won’t take up more of their time. It is quick, it is easy, and it is reusable. The average audience of this product is organized, likely in their 20’s, with a full time job, or multiple jobs. 

When: 

This gadget is intended for the entire breakfast eating experience. You use the shaper to create a toast shape out of eggs, sausage, pancakes, or whatever you so choose, and use the spatula to flip food while cooking. Then place the lid on top of the shaper, and flip it so the lid makes the bottom. Secure the lid with the elastic attached to the spatula.

Why: 

This gadget is intended to leave enough time to enjoy your food in the morning, and even for the busiest of people, to enjoy later in the day. People skip breakfast all the time, so by making breakfast as easy as possible, people might not just have a coffee and run, and instead think more in the morning and enjoy their time. This experience is intended to make people more aware and more time efficient. 

Emotion: 

Cheerful, Content, Relaxed. The idea is to make the busy person think more and appreciate the morning more, before heading out to work, or on the way to work. When we eat, we generally find ourselves thinking more, and if you skip breakfast you don't get that extra time to appreciate life. If the busy person makes a quick egg and eats it along the way instead of picking up just a coffee, they would likely feel more content and energized for the rest of the day.

Design Requirements

Who: A new way for large gatherings of people to consume food

When: Imagined in a block party, or family BBQ setting, it would be used as a way to entertain the guests while waiting on the food. We want our ceramic pieces to be part of the preparation process.

Why/Impact: We imagine it be behavioral as it's not necessarily the most effective way to do something but it's fun and a new way to do it. This can make the consumer find the entire experience more enjoyable.

Emotion Response: The object or tool is meant to take the user through a reimagined experience on how to consume "walk around" food. This is correlated with feelings of excitement satisfaction, and uniqueness as several other people give you compliments, and ask you question about your new gadget.

Iteration 1: Sketches

We were originally looking to design a new way to prepare a burger in a Block party like setting.

Iteration 1: Prototypes

We started creating quick and dirty prototypes based on our early sketches. However, we found that our prototypes lacked the color and playfulness our design requirements asked for.

We started looking in a completely other direction by looking at separate ways to consume party food

Iteration 2: Concept Re-integration

We took a giant step back, and with the help of our coaches, we were able to find something we thought had a promising outlook. We settled on an object that could holding everything you usually would on a paper plate, on a waist platter. Experimenting with placement and aesthetics, we geared toward creating high fidelity prototypes of our new vision.

Precedents

Pleinware: A playful response which questions whether a tableware needs a table to exist. Lauren Tedeschi invites others to lend their attention to eating habits beyond the table by keeping the convenience of street food and combining the comfort of indoor dining.

Yukon Glory Platter: A set of objects meant specifically to hold all aspects of a burger on one plate. With restaurant esc platting, you can enjoy the dining experience of a restaurant at home.

We had all of our ceramics intact and running, we needed a base plate that could easily be carried around and could hold the weight of the ceramics with ease. This brought several challenges for the attachment system, we ended up by using wedges to support the pieces.

Project Statement

The matzah tools are a five piece set designed to simplify to process of consuming matzah. The set is primarily designed to prevent matzah from breaking unevenly and crumbling during preparation. The visual style of the set is designed to pay homage to formal use while still being accessible to casual use.

WHO: 

Individually as a snack or with family during a meal.

WHEN:

The cutting and spreading devices are used during preparation and the plate could be used to eating to catch crumbs.

WHY/IMPACT:

These devices are used to improve the user’s experience by making it easier to cut, easier to prepare and cleaner to eat.

EMOTIONAL RESPONSE: 

We want our project to make the experience of eating matzah more enjoyable by eliminating the mess that it makes as well as making it more satisfying to prepare.

The afikomen cloth is used to wrap matzah during the passover seder. We intend to replicate the texture and design of an afikomen cloth on our tray.

Traditionally, cheese knives are used for cutting and spreading cheese. We want to take inspiration from these knives and design one for spreading butter on matzah. We want our design to put minimal pressure on matzah, to prevent the brittle food from cracking.

  Lucia's Head is a ceramic set of dinner cutlery inspired by food preparation and serving in traditional Italian families in America. The set, containing a Mixing and serving bowl, two eating bowls, and a ladle is perfect for Italian soups or stews, while artistically being designed after a well-known figurehead of Italian religion, Santa Lucia the Martyr Saint from Sicily.

It can be used as a platter specifically for eating and mixing. depending on what you're making

it can be used for formal, casual, or special occasions.

EMOTIONAL RESPONSE: 

It is designed to evoke nostalgia for the church of Santa Lucia with the fable of Santa Lucia by

using eye and throat imagery as well as using colors derived from traditional Italian earthware.

WHY/IMPACT: 

We intend to modernize the process of eating Italian soup and merge the process with the

story of Santa Lucia, who was killed by being impaled through her neck and having her eyes

removed.
