Breakfast Assistant

By: Noelle Aminoff and Mercy Schmidt

The Breakfast Assistant is designed for making breakfast easier to make and contain. It includes a bread-shaped cutter, a bread-shaped lid, and a folding spatula with an elastic attached to hold the container together. It is intended for a busy person to make a healthy breakfast quickly and efficiently. The user would take the shaper and shape eggs, toast, or whatever the user wishes, and place the food in the shaper on a griddle or cooking device. The user then uses the spatula to separate the cooked food from the cooking device and flip it. The container can be taken on the go with the lid, and the spatula folds against the container for easy storage, while holding the container together. The Assistant is made through slip casting 3d printed parts, and the spatula is simply 3d printed, and then attached to an elastic.

The project “Block Party Platter” is created to carry you food  at a gathering of friends in a hands-free way. Attached to your waist, you no longer have to worry about losing your food to gravity.

A family BBQ is a place where people enjoy food, company, and the outdoors. Aside from the once removed uncle who won't stop talking about political views, the only thing that could ruin a wonderful experience is a spillage of a greasy piece of burger and sugary soda drink alike, all over a nice piece of clothing. This is where "Block Party Platter" can be a lifesaver.

The “Block Party Platter” is a  simple belt attachment composed of a series of ceramic pieces that enable a user to chat, eat, and complete other activities without one hand being occupied by a paper plate. Not only does it make the grilling and eating experience less clumsy, stress free and intuitive, the consumer gets to show off their unique, aesthetic, party hack! Each ceramic piece is removable, allowing an  easy clean after dinner. The user’s hands, both free, can accomplish at least twice the amount of tasks!

The Matzah Kit is a four part set of tools designed to simplify the process of preparing and consuming matzah. The main issue that the Matzah Kit addresses is the inherent mess that comes with breaking and garnishing matzah.

The Matzah Kit is made for consumption of matzah during Passover. The kit can be used by anyone with basic fine motor controls due to its simplistic user interface. The kit has flour elements, the breaker, the tray, the matzah bowl, and the spreader. The breaker is a two part mechanism that bends the matzah until it breaks creating a clean cut. The tray catches any crumbs made by the process and the bowl holds matzah at the table until it is ready to be served. Finally the spreader is specially designed to prevent too much pressure from being applied to the matzah when spreading garnishes. These tools combined greatly simplify the process of serving matzah.

Lucia's Soup Bowl

Santa Lucia's head

A set by Coffy, Finn, and Isa

Santa Lucia’s Head is a ceramic set of dinner cutlery inspired by food preparation and serving in traditional Italian families in America. The set, containing a mixing and serving bowl, two eating bowls, and a ladle, is perfect for Italian soups or stews, while artistically being designed after a well-known figurehead to Italian religion, Santa Lucia, the Martyr Saint from Sicily.

Santa Lucia’s Head with its glazed patterns and Lucia imagery speaks to an experience of many descendants of Italian immigrants and feels very personal and nostalgic to use. The set takes inspiration from Santa Lucia by way of her story and important symbolism that appears in Italian depictions of her. Common examples are a sword; swords are important to Lucia’s imagery, as her story most commonly ends with the antagonists using a sword to kill her. The ladle in Lucia’s Head set is reflective of this; the handle of the ladle resembles a sword's hilt and handle. The ladle can be placed in a thin tunnel at the bottom of the serving bowl, reminiscent of Lucia’s untimely end with a sword to her neck. One of the most common examples of important imagery would be her eyes. In some tellings of her story, Lucia’s eyes were taken from her, while in others, she was born blind. Many paintings of Lucia feature her eyes on a plate she is holding or on her hands. This is well represented by the eating bowls. At the bottom of the bowl, once you've finished the soup, you can see an eye looking back at you.
