Student Support and Expectations

We have created a student handbook for students and parents to be able to reference. This handbook is an explanation of our school, expectations of students, and a collection of information students need to make the most of their NuVu experience. This is not a typical list of rules and regulations, but a result of many conversations with students, coaches, and staff.

The handbook was born out of students’ call for transparency, communication and accountability from NuVu staff. Our goal is to hold ourselves accountable and put forth a framework for student expectations and autonomy. We will be sending this to you by September 2.

Studio Supplies & Expectations

Each student will need the following items for studio each day

A laptop (with administrator access)

An unlined sketchbook and writing utensils (pencils or pens)

Laptops

Each NuVu student must have a laptop and an email address to complete project work over the course of their studios and to communicate with their coaches and peers. Most laptops purchased within the last two to five years will work. For more detailed information on what we recommend, please see the attached Hardware & Software Requirements document.

Parent Noticeboard

This Fall, we will continue to use NuVu’s Parent Noticeboard! For all school-related updates, information regarding our weather and safety policies, student forms, and general resources please follow the link below to our Parent Noticeboard.

IMPORTANT | Updates to NuVu Mask Policy

Molly Powers

NuVu Families -

Thank you for your continued support this year as we navigate new changes and guidance related to the COVID-19 pandemic. After assessing a few rounds of community feedback, monitoring other local schools and reflecting on new CDC guidelines for masking in schools, we are updating our mask policy for NuVu students and staff.

Please take a moment to read through the upcoming changes below.

What IS changing:

  • NuVu will shift to a mask-optional approach starting Monday April 4, 2022
  • NuVu will relax the N95 mask requirement as of today, Wednesday March 9. Face coverings are still required, but single layer surgical or cloth masks are now acceptable until April 1
  • Some studios will no longer have a remote option
    • Students and families must let NuVu know of planned absences at least one week prior to the start of a new studio so that we may work with your student to schedule make-up studio time
    • Please see academic calendar here for studio session dates

What IS NOT changing:

  • Routine COVID-19 testing; we will continue the current testing schedule
    • Next test scheduled for Thursday March 10
  • All students and staff must be tested for COVID-19 prior to returning onsite after Spring Break

Earlier this afternoon, coaches summarized these changes for students. They also talked with students about how important it is for all of us to be respectful regarding the range of perspectives within our community. We sent out a sign-up sheet for students who want to talk more tomorrow or Friday about any questions or concerns they may have.

As we continue to prioritize the health and safety of our community, we recognize there may be times throughout the remainder of the year when we will have to reinstate a mask mandate for students, faculty, and staff.

We appreciate your patience as we navigate this landscape and are available to answer any questions you may have! Please do not hesitate to reach out directly to molly@nuvustudio.org

Warm Regards,

The NuVu Team

Capstone MMXXII - Grade 12

Capstone is the culmination of students' experience at NuVu .It will provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate the skills & knowledge they have gained during their time at NuVu. During capstone students will conduct an in-depth study of a topic of their choice, which highlights their learning using an area(s) of interest as the basis for their capstone. This should be an area that students are passionate and interested in and anticipate they will be pursuing after graduation. Capstone is designed to encourage students to think critically, solve challenging problems, internal and external expert discussions will be integrated into the capstone experience. Students will have the opportunity to discover their interests and connect their studies & skills to a professional context, demonstrating their ability to identify design challenges and devise an innovative solution for a global issue or an applied orientation within a field of study.

Capstone is an attempt to urge students to take a position in the world, nurture their perspective, and clarify that position problem. Students will be challenged to apply new skills and knowledge towards advancing a discipline through their project. While a Capstone scope and scale can be challenging, it can also be a very rewarding and valuable hands-on experience that will develop students into well-prepared and well-rounded graduates.

Humans in the Loop (concentration studio 1 of 2) | Grades 10 - 11

In Humans in the Loop students will embark on an exploration in creative coding, which sits at the intersection of design and computer science. Computers are not independent objects, they exist to serve people. In this studio, students will learn how to create applications and websites that address the needs of our particular school, and the wider Central Square community.  Students will address the foundations of computer science in order to use code creatively to inform current and future work at NuVu.

Each assignment in this studio will teach a programming technique and apply that technique to a small design project. Beginning by exploring the basics of computing systems, students will learn how creative coding can inform physical design work, engineering projects, or media work. The culmination of the studio will feature student-created digital design interventions that address the challenges in our local community.  Example projects might include promotional materials for a newly opened business, data visualizations that address the use of new outdoor spaces, or assistive applications that help students track their sleep needs.

Instrumentarium | Grades 10 - 11

The phrase “everything is a remix” was coined by Kirby Ferguson in 2010. This phrase has been true for as long as we have told stories, sung songs, and shared ideas. But the way in which we are able to remix, and the number of ideas we have access to has increased exponentially with the advent of the internet and social media platforms. We can access every stage of music production. So how do these technologies shape the way we experience music?

Instrumentarium is a vibes-based studio in which we will explore the traditional and contemporary music experience. Students will explore the design of the instruments themselves, in addition to the encoding, decoding, and remixing of sound.

Sculpted RitualsGrades 8 - 9

For centuries, food has been central to cultural, social, and spiritual rituals around the world. For some, the objects that hold food and drink are as essential to the practice as the food itself. Though some vessels and tools are known for their role in ceremony and celebration - such as Japanese matcha tea sets and patterned cookie molds - items as simple as a coffee mug or a tortilla press embody hundreds of small design decisions that influence how we interact with and prepare food.

In this studio, we will explore the current roles that food can play in the way we engage with each other, ourselves, and our own social and personal traditions. We will use advanced rhino modeling and slip-casting techniques to design ceramic vessels that highlight and facilitate these food practices, creating a new generation of meaningful objects that capture our present and emerging culture.

NuVu COVID-19 Reminders

Molly Powers

Dear NuVu Community,

Thank you for your support in communication this week and last as we navigate the current Omicron landscape. We’re writing to remind you of our recent COVID-19 policy updates. Please read carefully below to review these recent changes.

Updated Mask Requirement

All students and staff will now be asked to wear masks that are equivalent to N95 masks. This includes KN95 and KF94 masks. We have provided masks for students this week of Jan. 10. NuVu unfortunately cannot provide these masks for the duration of the year, we have a small supply for emergencies.

COVID Testing

NuVu students participating in onsite programming are required to be tested for COVID-19 at least once every fourteen (14) days. All students and staff are required to be tested upon returning from breaks regardless of where it falls in the bi-monthly schedule. Testing options are available onsite at NuVu through CIC pooled tests, and we accept tests from any local CDC accepted testing resource.

NuVu will now test students every Monday morning, before studios start. Students will be tested once every other Monday.

If you have not yet opted in to NuVu’s pooled testing program but would like to, please complete and submit the attached Consent Form at your earliest convenience. Families who prefer to utilize free resources closer to their home, through their primary care physician, or any other CDC accepted COVID testing resource must self-report negative results to molly@nuvustudio.org every other Friday.

Lunch

In making decisions about safety during snacks and meals, we are prioritizing two factors that are most protective against the spread of COVID when masks have been removed: ventilation and physical distancing.

Ventilation:

The safest place to be without a mask is outdoors. When it is feasible, students will take their lunch outdoors, unless weather or other conditions make it unsafe to do so. Physical distancing is not required when meals take place outdoors.

If weather conditions prevent taking lunch outside, windows and doors will be opened, and HEPA filters will be switched to high. Each studio space has one HEPA filter, with the exception of the largest studio space, which has two. It is recommended that for every 750 square feet, one HEPA filter should be used.

Physical Distancing:

Although not required outdoors, when meals and snacks take place indoors, students must be seated at least 3 feet apart, facing in the same direction while their masks are off.

  • Windows will be open from approximately 12:15 - 12:45 PM; students are encouraged to use this time for active eating/drinking
  • Masks should remain on when not actively eating or drinking
  • Coaches eat at different time than students
  • Acquired two additional HEPA filters

Updates to COVID-19 Safety Policies

Threshold for Onsite Studio

In order to facilitate an adequate studio experience, at least 70% of students need to be present onsite. Due to the size of our student body, the highly collaborative work, and tactile nature of NuVu’s curriculum, we know from experience that student engagement is higher as a collective. In order to maintain continuity in the community culture of each studio, we will strive to keep studio groups together wherever possible, even if this means going remote for a few days. We are ready to create custom maker-kits for each studio should the need arise, but we will consistently prioritize in-person learning through routine testing of students and staff.

We aim to have consistently relevant information about covid transmission in our community with these routine checks. In the event a pooled test returns presumptive-positive results, and less than 70% of students are able to remain onsite, the entire student body will transition to remote learning for a minimum of four (4) days while follow-up tests and contact tracing takes place.

Positive Test Protocol and Quarantine Guidelines

If a pooled COVID-19 test returns a presumptive positive result, all students in this pool will be asked to attend studio remotely until a follow-up test is completed. Should this make less than 70% of students eligible for onsite participation, all students will transition to remote learning until follow-up tests can be completed. Families are responsible for individual follow-up testing.

Asymptomatic COVID-19

Individuals who have tested positive but remain asymptomatic will need to complete a five (5) day quarantine, and submit two negative rapid antigen tests within a 24-48 hour period prior to returning to NuVu’s physical studio space. Upon returning, the individual will need to double mask for an additional five (5) days, and monitor any onset of symptoms. Two negative rapid tests, and an N95 mask, or two surgical or cloth masks will be required to return onsite. Individuals who are presumed to have tested positive, do not need to quarantine, but must submit two negative rapid antigen tests within a 24-48 hour period prior to returning to NuVu’s physical studio space.

Symptomatic COVID-19

Individuals who have tested positive, and are also experiencing symptoms, will need to complete a ten (10) day quarantine. Provided that the ninth and tenth days (48-hours) of quarantine are symptom and fever free, the individual should seek medical guidance, or take a PCR test within a 24-48 hour period prior to returning to NuVu’s physical studio space. Once negative results have been submitted to NuVu, the individual may return to studio on the eleventh day. A negative PCR test and an N95 mask, or two surgical or cloth masks will be required to return onsite.

When A Close Contact Tests Positive

Definition of Close Contact: Anyone who was less than six (6) feet away from a COVID-positive individual while indoors for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more per 24-hour period is considered a close contact, even if masks were worn.

Regardless of their vaccination status or whether they are required to quarantine, close contacts must monitor for symptoms for 14 days. Vaccinated individuals do not need to quarantine but should seek testing 3-5 days after the date of last exposure. They must also wear an N95 mask in public indoor settings, in addition to the required masks when inside the NuVu building.

If an individual in a student or staff member’s household is symptomatic and is in the process of being tested for COVID, the student or staff member should stay home until a rapid test can be acquired, or until the household member’s status is known. If a household member is positive for COVID, then quarantine procedures must be followed by all individuals coming onsite to NuVu. The student or staff member should then get tested between days 3-5 after the date of last exposure.

Suspicious Symptoms? Please Stay Home

While the risk of contracting COVID is dramatically lower for those who are fully-vaccinated, a small chance of becoming sick or making others sick remains. Therefore, COVID symptoms must be taken very seriously by everyone, regardless of vaccination status. Any student or staff member experiencing the following symptoms should stay at home:

  • Cough (not due to other known cause, such as chronic cough)
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Fatigue in combination with other symptoms
  • Fever of 100.0 F or higher, chills, or shaking chills
  • Headache in combination with other symptoms
  • Muscle aches or body aches
  • Nasal congestion or runny nose (not due to other known causes, such as allergies) when in combination with other symptoms
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat

As always, we are endlessly thankful to you all for your continued consideration of community health. We look forward to a time when these measures are loosened and we have more normalcy in our school days.

All the best,

The NuVu Team
