Pre-Studio Activity

Keenan Gray

Greetings Everyone and welcome to Augmented Reality Games Summer 2020!!!. Your coaches Keenan and Ryan are so excited to meet everyone and build awesome games together over the next two weeks.

This studio presents an awesome opportunity to learn an impressive number of skills and create a game that can be shared with friends and relatives all over. In order for our students to get the most out of this studio we have prepared and shipped each of you a Game Creation Kit to help everyone get started. With this kit we expect each student to complete an introductory activity that will help us learn a little bit about each student and introduce augmented reality technology.

Part 1: Software Installation

The following software will be a necessity for success in this studio. You and your families should already have been informed of the necessary computer requirements. You should have at least 20 Gigabytes of free storage space on your computer to install this software.

  1. Unity : the Unity game development engine will be used predominantly in this studio. Instructions on installing the program can be found here. It is available for Mac and Windows (Chromebooks will not work).
  2. MagickaVoxel. An lightweight and easy to use 3D-Modeling program. Installation Instructions
  3. Clayxels: An addon for Unity that allows for additional 3D modeling options. Installation Instructions.

Part 2: Augmented reality collage

The first assignment is to take resources you can collect at home and create a collage. The collage should fit on a standard sheet of paper and incorporate enough detail that it is scannable via augmented reality (more details about this are discussed in the full assignment instructions). Before the first day of the studio please complete Part 1 of these instructions
