PROJECT STATEMENT

؜Liberia and the U.S. have deeply intertwining connections and history, although it goes unnoticed. The importance of such history is communicated by our group's ceramic pieces that have parts that physically move. Our project is intended to leave the consumer with a message communicating the need for social justice. We hope through pottery, it helps educate the audience about the identifies of people who were erased from history. As well as the connection between American and Liberia food's.

؜FOOD RITUAL - Dry Rice and Washing Day

؜Dry rice and washing day is a sacred tradition, done only on Saturdays, where families spend their Saturdays cleaning, washing clothes, and cooking dry rice.

؜The design style and language of Liberia usually consists of mask making, woodcarving, and pottery. Art in Liberia is used to tell stories regarding cultural heritage, a story the artist wishes to tell. The details are intricate with meaningful stories behind it.

؜Combining the flavors of palm butter, a traditional Liberian dish which serves as a supporting stew. With fried chicken from America. Palm butter, enhancing the flavors around it represents the strong African roots of Liberia despite being founded by Americans. It is used for the breading and marination of the fried chicken.

All of this is contrasted with a palm butter hot sauce, showing the violent founding of Liberia which involved the mistreatment of natives. A spice mix is prepared with traditional southern spices, this is combined with buttermilk and palm butter to create our brine. After the chicken is brined it is breaded with a flour, spice, palm butter mix. Finally after being deep fried and then baked, the chicken is ready to be dipped into the hot sauce.

This dish is primarily about how Liberia and USA cuisine connect. Representing how strong African roots of Liberia are still being represented despite still having a american foundation.

When Italians arrived in Brazil in the late 19th century, they were originally separated from the Brazilians that lived there. Italians were usually placed on coffee plantations as contract laborers. They lived in separate housing on the farms, often separated from native Brazilian workers or landowners. Italians also spoke a different language, which limited social interaction with native Brazilians.

Pao De Queijo originates in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. The cheesy bread balls are often served as a street food. Pesto Pao De Queijo is a mix of these bread balls and Italian pesto. This fusion is meant to represent the immigration of Italians to Brazil, where the Italians were separated from the Brazilians and not mixed in. To show this, we made the Pesto Pao De Queijo where the pesto is separated from the bread and not mixed in.

؜The gyoza style sauerkraut dumplings are a fusion food meant to demonstrate how the two largest fascist empires during WWII started off very differently. The dish combines two foods hinting at the strong ties between the countries later in the war but pulls together very different contrasting flavors to highlight their differences. At the begging of the war Japan wanted resources and land so created a plot against themselves so they could frame china and enter the war.

Germany on the other hand after the treaty of Versailles felt like they had been taken advantage of. The other European countries preventing trade which made there economy plunge. With this and the European directed control of Germany military made for a disgruntled populous to say the least. The display orientation of the dumplings represent the black sun. The strong and flavorful sauce and filling represents the complex ways the empires started to join the war.

Our entree meal is a miso soup served in a German bretzle style bread bowl representing the use and spread of propaganda during the war. On your plate multiple bowls rest as you spread propaganda in the form of soup around your bread bowl based townships. The bretzel bread bowl is of German origin. Miso soup originated in China, but hundreds of years ago has thought to have been brought to Japan via trade. The action of spreading propaganda is represented by the consumer pouring the soup into each bread bowl.

As the soup sits in the bowl for more and more time, the bretzel bread bowl becomes softer and saturated with a stronger flavor. The bread bowl has a bland flavor, but a strong texture that soaks well with the flavorful soup. It is soft and doughy with a hard exterior. The soup has a savory salty flavor. The green onion on top once given enough time is absorbed into the soup and bread adds a strong complexity to the flavor. With time, as the propaganda sets in the dish develops into a one mass while it starts as separate components.

؜Poor communication, resource shortages, and failure to adapt all led to Germany and Japan's defeat in WWII. Germany's poor coordination-especially between Hitler and his generals-caused disasters like the split during Operation Barbarossa (1941), while both nations often declared war without consulting each other.

Japan's navy was crippled after U.S. embargoes and blockades cut off vital oil and rubber supplies, and Germany's invasion of the USSR to seize oil fields led to the bloody Battle of Stalingrad and its downfall.

Their refusal to adapt-Germany's outdated blitzkrieg tactics and Japan's failure to modernize its air strategy —sealed their fate. The Mochi Lebkuchen dessert reflects this story: mochi's rice bread symbolizes lost rubber, chocolate the seized oil, and Lebkuchen chunks the rubble and collapse of the Axis powers.

PROJECT STATEMENT

This collection showcases Italian immigration to Brazil and its subsequent effects. We've chosen to tell this story through the path coffee takes from cherry to bean to a cup in your house. These ceramics are made to accompany the project that Rafa and Paxton did before us, showing the process of Italian integration into Brazilian spaces and culture.

Over time, Italians in Brazil gradually connected with Brazilians. Although they initially remained within their own communities, they eventually shared traditions, food, and farming techniques, largely through working together in industry. This dish represents that cultural integration by combining a traditional Brazilian shrimp dish, moqueca de camarões, with spaghetti, a staple of Italian cuisine. Traditionally served with rice, the dish replaces rice with spaghetti to symbolize the blending and assimilation of these two cultures. Both foods are comfort dishes in their respective countries.

The entree is moqueca de cameroes With speghetti, It is kind of supposed to be a stew. but it turned into more of a sauce. this dish was supposed to repressent gradual integrations of italians and brazillians.

The dessert consists of Brigadeiro De Tiramisu. This combination represents the fluidity between Italian and Brazilian culture that arose naturally after centuries of mingling together. The coffee in tiramisu symbolizes the labor Italians carried out on coffee plantations. Brigadeiro is a common street food in Brazil. Coffee plantations were a big thing when Italians immigrated to Brazil. It was a way to make money, pay off debt, and a good starting point for a life in Brazil. The only down side to coffee plantations was the land owners, they would take advantage of the Italians and target them to get free labor by putting them in a ton of debt by paying for their immigration.

؜Despite being on opposite sides of Europe, Ireland and Palestine share a surprisingly similar history of colonial oppression and exploitation. These three Irish-Palestinian fusion dishes explore common themes of these two nations oppression and eventual struggle for freedom. This project will create a set of vessels to serve and expand upon the story told in the fusion dishes.

APPETIZER

This dish combines the flavors of Irish Stew with the form and yogurt sauce of Shish Barak, a type of Palestinian dumpling. This dish focuses on the ties of both dishes to community gatherings and togetherness. Irish stew was used as a way to make scarce meat stretch further when there wasn’t enough, such as during the Great Potato Famine. It uses mostly potato, carrots, and peas with a smaller amount of meat and broth, cooked all together. Irish Stew is often made as a large communal dish, similar to Shish Barak.

Shish Barak is a type of dumpling with a meat filling, cooked in a yogurt sauce. Shish Barak is also served as a communal dish, mainly because of the long preparation time and large amount of servings that can be made at the same time. The combination of the two dishes is Shish Barak with the filling replaced with Irish Stew. It’s cooked in the yogurt sauce from Shish Barak and served covered in it, with mint on top.

This dish combines Musakhan, a Palestinian chicken dish that’s served over Taboon flatbread, using Soda Bread to replace the flatbread. Soda Bread is a type of Irish bread that uses baking soda as its only leavening agent, replacing yeast entirely. This dish utilizes cornmeal in place of flour used in the soda bread. The cornmeal is a nod to the Great Potato Famine in Ireland, during which the British government sent cornmeal to Ireland to be used as a substitute for the potato starch that was a staple of most meals. Overall, the Irish were frustrated by this because undercooked cornmeal meals were difficult to eat and gave people indigestion.

Musakhan is a dish that uses chicken cooked with spices served over Taboon bread, a type of flatbread. Musakhan is often made as an act of resistance against cultural appropriation and the occupation of Palestine, and to keep Palestinian culture alive. Activists like Hanadi Halawani make Musakhan to resist attempts to erase Palestinian culture. These two dishes are deeply linked to the struggles against their occupiers that both countries have had, as well as the fight to keep their culture alive in the face of cultural erasure.

Irish Fruit Cake is a type of fruit cake made by boiling most of the ingredients in a pan to bring out the flavors, then combining these with flour to make a thicker batter. This dish is used because of its history involved in the Fruitcake Prison Break, in which Eamon de Valera (an Irish republican) was broken out of prison with a key smuggled in baked inside of a fruitcake. This dish uses Irish Fruit Cake with candied orange peel baked into it, topped with candied Jaffa orange slices.

Jaffa oranges are a type of Palestinian orange with strong ties to cultural erasure and appropriation. Starting in 1948, with the creation of the State of Israel, Israel began confiscating Jaffa orange groves. They used absentee property laws allowing Israel to confiscate land owned by people who became refugees after the 1948 Palestine War. These two components fit together well because of their shared ties to resistance and cultural erasure.

This project connects research on propaganda and deception in fascist Germany and Japan to a creative food and design experience. A three-course meal represents the rise and fall of these regimes: the appetizer reflects false justifications for war through misleading presentation, the main course symbolizes the overwhelming spread of propaganda with bold, heavy flavors, and the dessert represents collapse using unstable textures or bitter contrasts. Ingredients, colors, plating, and even how the food is eaten all carry symbolic meaning, while the ceramic tableware reinforces these ideas through shape, weight, and surface design, turning history into a sensory, visual story about power, manipulation, and consequences.

PROJECT STATEMENT

Though Cuba and China diverge in many ways, they share a handful of similarities. In the mid 20th century, both countries formed a communist government. In addition, they share many food and ceramic traditions. In this project we fuse foods from both countries creating fun new tastes. For the cherry on top we are creating a custom ceramic dishes to complement the meal.

Yuán Bǎo Jiǎo Zi a la Criolla is a Chinese-Cuban fusion dish that crosses Chinese dumplings and Cuban picadillo. It examines Cuba and China’s shared history of revolts, especially the ones leading up to their development into Communist countries. Each dumpling represents a crowd of people, each colored red to display their desire to re-organize their government into a Communist regime and the spread of Communist ideas throughout the population. Their ingot shape and beef filling both stand for money and economy, foreshadowing the effect communism would have on both countries. The Ingot Dumpling first appeared in the era of the Eastern Han under Zhang Zhongjing, and were originally made to treat frostbitten ears.

؜Sticky Rice con Chicharron is the China-cuba fusion entree which is Cantonese sticky rice, chicharron which is fried pork skin, and a braised pork sauce. The dish strives to combine the textures and flavors of the different foods. All three of these foods are very common and traditional in both cultures. What stands out the most is the Chicharron because it is simple, cheap and efficiently uses the whole pig. This was crucial while they were struggling with food shortages during the fall of the USSR.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

؜Though Cuba and China diverge in many ways, they share a handful of similarities. In the mid 20th century, both countries formed a communist government. In addition, they share many food and ceramic traditions. In this project we fuse foods from both countries creating fun new tastes. For the cherry on top we are creating a custom ceramic dishes to complement the meal.

Sticky Rice con Chicharron is a Chinese-Cuban fusion dish combining crispy Chicharron which is deep-fried pork skin, cantonese sticky rice and a braised pork sauce mixing two traditional dishes

CRAFT TRADITION

؜A large food ritual in China is communal eating/ meals. Large amounts of food served and past around to deepen community and connections within families and groups.

؜Qing Hua or blue and white porcelain is Chinas most famous and Iconic ceramic tradition. The cobalt blue on white porcelain ceramics are often decorated with traditional Chinese dragons and geometric patterns

CRAFT TRADITION

Pasteles are a traditional christmas dinner. Due to the intense process of making this dish, it's quite a treat and there's even a special song to go with it.

؜Traditional cuban crafts include virbrent fabric and ceramics. More specifically, pots and vases with long flowing necks and radiant floral cutouts.

The red dumplings in a square formation in a round blue dish represent the revolutionaries contrasted with the greater norm. Around the outside walls, there will be symbols representing the overthrown government.

PROTOTYPE 1

؜The raised square portion is meant to hold 9 dumplings. There will be chanels for red glaze, (symbolizing blood) to flow down creating a mote around the outside. The upper portion of the walls have traditional Cuban style cutouts.

؜A shallow plate with two smooth sides and two chipped/ cracked sides as well as a crack going down the center with one large white star and a smaller red one.

؜An oval like bowl with one side being higher than the other the higher side is slightly chipped and the shorter side is smooth. Supports underneath so when one is removed the food slides to one side
