The eyes
By Matthew & Sammy
Thesis
The eyes is a photography exhibit that highlights the scale and invasiveness of digital surveillance. By placing the viewer in an observing space looking at a collage of photographs the eyes makes the viewer feel uncomfortable and exposed by comparing online surveillance eyes. This realization makes the viewer more cautious about when and with who they share their data online.

Process Diagram
Brainstorm and planning What is the art about? What feelings are we trying to evoke? What part of modern society are we trying to critique?
Refine ideas and plan a final piece How will final piece demonstrate our thesis? Pick a medium(s), to combine with photography.
Set up the room where we will shoot. Blackout all the windows and transparent walls. Create a controlled light environment to take photos
Assemble our final piece Glue our photos and laser cuts together.
Create prints Experiment with different types of paper and paper sizes. Experiment with printmaking.
Shoot and develop our film Spend a day in Beaver's darkroom, developing film.
Prototypes / Iterations
What did you learn in this process?
- Photography
- Film development process
- Print making process
- Controlled lighting environment for photography
- Fog machine
- Burning photos
- Laser cutting photos
How does having more creative freedom helped you in this OI?
- Helped us pivot our project (went from audio to art)
- Gave us more room for flexible art making (shoot now, assemble later)
What were the challenges?
- Time. Wasted a week on a failed audio project. Need to think about if my idea is good or not.
- Planning. Needed more time to develop our photos. Originally we were hopping to do cyanatype but only got one day of planning in the darkroom.
