Harvard's Grave Mistakes

Harvard's Grave Mistakes

We looked into Harvard's history in grave robbing. We learned that in 1999 they were renovating the holden chapel (which used to be the medical school) and found bones in the basement walls. It turns out that in the 18th century they needed bodies to dissect and so they dug up the graves of people that had less protection around their graves. Specifically minorities and unidentified bodies. We learned a lot using google scholar to find credible sources and learned how to make annotated bibliographies. We learned how to make a podcast, and overall it was super fun!

Outrage and hate content is a profitable business on platforms such as YouTube and TikTok. Not only does outrage capture viewership, but it is extremely effective at cultivating robust communities that reinforce the demand for the hate content they consume. The American alt-right uses this quality of the internet to spread its message and influence culture toward hateful, extremist sentiments. Conservative hate content communities are forged through shared language, memes, and aesthetics; understanding these mechanisms teaches us how the alt-right works and how the profit motive influences alt-right content. By cross-referencing transcripts of the forum pages responsible for organizing the hate campaign known as GamerGate, with the theory for understanding alt-right movements developed by Joan Donovan and Harry Frankfurt, I can see that language plays an important role in the unification of outraged people into movements. These movements can then be profited off of by online creators who make content that appeals to the hateful sentiments of the community, as long as they keep their language relevant.

How does racism effect pioneers of the film industry?

By Wyatt Gold

This essay is going to cover Oscar Micheaux, known as the first major African American filmmaker, and his struggles with racism in his era. He wrote novels and soon transformed them into movies, starting his own film company, “Micheaux Film and Book Company.” Being black in the early 1900s, there were many challenges to overcome while making a film, like budget, actors, sets, and more. His films, starring a solely black cast, were revolutionary for his time. He cast young African American actors to give them a chance in the spotlight, playing distinguished and complex characters, unlike the demeaning, small roles they would be offered by mainstream Hollywood. He used his films as a platform to preach his thoughts to the masses. He was an inspiration to all suppressed communities and paved the way for future independent film directors. I want my project to inform the public about Oscar Micheaux and the work he did that wasn't appreciated.
