Project Summary
In Boston, there are multiple empty or deserted lots that communities don’t use or don’t care about. When spaces go unused, they may become unsafe or simply useless. We aim to turn these unused empty lots into areas that people and communities can use and enjoy while also being safe. On the right is Lederman Park, a site that we are focusing on and are trying to improve.
Lederman Park
Why this site
When selecting a site, we wanted to find a place in a high-traffic area that wasn't currently being used. We also wanted to find a place that already has development around it such as restaurants and other entertainment. After researching places around Boston and Cambridge, we came across Lederman Park, located on Sturrow Drive across from MGH. It sits next to the Charles, meaning it's right next to part of the Charles River path. It already has baseball fields around it in a neighboring park but Lederman itself remains empty and overgrown. It has the potential to become a highly used space as many people drive past it every day or walk by it when they are walking along the Charles.

Brainstorming - Three Major Ideas
Idea 1
man hallucinates a scary creature, must journey to the other side of the house to take meds, sleeps, and wakes up with the creature. The End. Pills don't make the monster go away, you just can't see it anymore.
Idea 2
The writer is in their house and wrote a very good book. Wants to make the next book, very stressed. In the room, that doesn't like the book. walks downstairs and finds scary creatures that embody the fears of writing a book.
Idea 3
A dystopian world where if you get into debt or are late, you get killed.
Which after being narrowed down and discussed...
Idea 1
Man hallucinates a scary creature after forgetting to take medication, must journey to the other side of the house to take the forgotten meds, goes to sleep after achieving his goal, only to wake up and still see the creature. The medication doesn't make the monster go away, you just can't see it anymore, which is a comment on the modern medical world.
We then decided to change directions a bit after seeing what we liked and disliked

What We Would Have Done Differently
Interview is a film about reflecting and making decisions based on events. In the film, the main character Christian Carrol is a rookie journalist, and gets an interview with a serial killer. He has a rocky first interview and goes home only to hallucinate that the serial killer is in his own home. He goes back to the serial killer for a second interview to try and understand what happened, and after conversing decides that journalism might not be the best path for him. Interview was about experimenting with filming techniques and script writing.

Writting
In Open Innovation this studio, my group and I worked together to create a story. We wanted this concept to be more original and not usually done, so we decided to combine illustrations and writing in a single story, like a picture or chapter book but for an older audience. Why can't people over the age of 10 enjoy a drawing? After coming up with a clear idea for what we wanted to accomplish over the next 3 weeks, we quickly started brainstorming and planning. Many different story ideas and themes were thrown around for a couple days, until we all came to a collective decision about the plot, using different writing games to narrow down what we were all interested in writing about. After coming up with the plot, we started to develop characters and their relationships between each other, and started creating in depth outlines for each scene and sub scene. Then came the longest part of the project, the drafting. We wrote a lot as a group while Kody focused on the illustrations, but in the end after all the rephrasing and rewriting and formatting; we were proud of the final product.
In this studio, I was able to expand on different skills I had previously; such as collaborating, concept development, and writing, With my group, I was able to simultaneously work on collaborating with others while all collectively and separately working on this project. The hardest thing during this OI was the writing and comprising with my group. Still, through this process, I was able to become more understanding and open to different edits and became more comfortable giving them to my partners. Overall, this studio has let me expand on my writing and helped me with concept development, planning, and collaborating on a skill I previously thought to be independent.

Day 1
Tableau
I came across a program called Tableau which is a program that can be used to convey data. During my research I decided I would use it for my ways to show data. I watched a couple youtube tutorials and got the idea of how to work through Tableau
With Tableau I made a lot of charts and graphs the show my data, but one of my favorite features was the map feature.
What is Tableau
What I did with Tableau
After looking through all the sources I had to think of two ideas to help solve runway incursions
Solution
The Solutions
For this solution, airports would place antennas and lights on runways. The antennas would geolocate planes and display them to other pilots taking off or landing. This would help make sure during intense weather conditions pilots know what is in front of the pilots.
In the second solution, we would improve the radar in airplanes to be more similar to the ones with ATC. this would give the pilots more confidence in the sky.
Thank you
For our Open Innovation project, my group and I wrote a short story with illustrations. We worked for 3 and a half weeks brainstorming, developing characters, drafting, and editing our mini book.
