Writing

Throughout this studio, we have been learning about gothic literature, coding, story building, drawing, etc. We analyzed many different pieces of gothic literature to understand it more, and we then went through a process to learn basic skills that we would need to create our final product, a horror game. This consisted of mini-lessons on coding, comic creation, drawing, and dialogue/writing practice. After practicing these skills, we then worked on creating stories individually, which eventually evolved into group work. My group's story is about 3 astronauts who deal with horrific events in space, specifically on Titan. They go insane due to a strange fog and start to stop trusting each other. The story is supposed to be suspenseful and horrific.

This project was quite beneficial to my learning and skill-building since I learned and sharpened quite a few skills—specifically dialogue writing and story building, as I mentioned in the paragraph above. I got a lot of writing practice which will help me with essay writing and reflections when I return to Beaver. I learned the fundamentals of code too and now know a bit about how to make a list out of code as well as a randomized generated sentence. Overall, it was a very beneficial project for me.

Our studio was about interactive fiction. More specifically it was about writing horror. We got 3 weeks to write, revise, and code our own game. The first week was a lot of learning how to use the programs we were going to use. The second week we started writing and brainstorming ideas for our games. We got a lot of peer feedback and got a solid idea for our story. On the final week we found out we could have partners, I partnered with Andre and Charlie. We merged our stories into one and starting building. We made a flow diagram for our story and then started the twine. Once we finished our game we play tested it and made sure there were no loose ends.

In this studio I learned many new things. Some of the more important were about coding. I learned how to use Tracery and Twine which are both Java Script. I think learning these two programs could benefit me by giving me the ability to know how to compute basic Java Script functions. These are helpful because a lot of jobs require coding experience and having a fundamental base could get me started in the right direction.

Writing

Our project was a choose-your-own-adventure story about people on Titan who get stuck in a cave. They think they are fighting against an alien, but it turns out it's actually just the gas in the cave making them go crazy. In the end, depending on your choices, either you and your partner both die, you die and your partner lives, or you both live.

In this studio I learned a lot about the writing process. I learned a lot about the value of flow diagrams, and other management techniques. Flow diagrams were really helpful to me, so I might use those in the future. I also learned a lot about the twinery program, which I could use in the future.

Concept Devlopment

For our project, we created a 'Chose Your Own Adventure' coding game using the software platform Twine. Many different steps went into this game, such as drafting and writing a short story, creating digital characters and images, and finally coding to create our final game. For the writing part of this project to come up with an idea we looked for inspiration from different short horror stories; such as The Yellow Wallpaper and The Fall of the House of Usher. After reading and learning about the different aspects that go into horror stories, we created our own using storyboards, mood boards, story flow charts, and more. We then split up focusing on different aspects of our final creation, some working on coding our writing into Twine and others creating digital characters and images to add to the game. At the end of our work time, we combined everything and created our final game.

During this studio, I was exposed to different criteria and skills than I used to at my school, Beaver. I expanded my knowledge of the horror and gothic genres, learning different components and styles of famous short stories. I also strengthened my skills in story planning, outlining, and drafting. However, in this studio session, my knowledge of coding improved the most whether it was creating and practicing coding functions or making games on Twine. Overall, I am glad I had these experiences I wouldn't have originally had the chance to at Beaver.

Giving and Receiving Feedback

A short twine Choose-Your-Own-Adventure game about the horrors of Intrusive thoughts. The story was built to encapsulate the uncomfortable feelings and anxieties provoked by these thoughts. It also serves to make a commentary on how society treats people with intrusive thoughts in an attempt to normalize their existence and educate people on the topic. More specifically, the game is a commentary on how people with mental health conditions often only get the help they need when they do something extreme enough to "prove" they have a problem.

I grew in my understanding of myself. This studio was certainly challenging for me, but in a more practical and general sense. I learned how to work in an environment where I was only given one assignment, and it was up to me to organize and break down tasks so that I could complete the assignment on time. It was also up to me to decide the design requirements for the majority of the assignment. Knowing that I was in control of what I had to do proved difficult for focus, and was a challenge which I overcame. For the future, I plan on just completing tasks I set for myself to completion so that I don't get stuck in perfecting my goals.
