Joylogger is a device designed to help the client to visualize their joy.

It does this by throughout the day when the user has joyful moments they would activate the device and it would save the location and time data and then at the end of the day the user would have a physical map that would have led lights to represent different locations.

They would glow at different intensities depending on the amount the device was activated during the day. This gives the user an opportunity to see when and where they had all of these joyful moments throughout the day so they have a moment to reflect.

Photosensitivity, in reference to a more intense form of light sensitivity, affects anywhere from 5 - 20% of the population. Despite this, most lights aren't accommodating to this, having no option for a dimmer, or some bulbs even worsening the effects of light sensitivity. Verity, also being affected by photosensitivity, requested a solution to this. what they need in a lamp, and what's not necessary but a nice addition.

Illuminate Solution is a design for a more accommodating light, using the information given from Verity’s firsthand experience with photosensitivity. The “Bulb” is simple, being a Neopixal LED light strip, with a button switching between warm or cool light. Most LED lights flicker, turning on and off repeatedly faster than human eyes can pick up. This makes people with photophobia more likely to have headaches as the light is on. The Illuminate Solution avoids this by maintaining a consistent light. The lampshade for this product is designed to work similarly to window blinds. Using a cord, the lampshade can be pulled tight, folding in on itself, or be loose, and let the lampshade unfold. Using the folded paper to block light, this acts as a dimmer, while utilizing a visually interesting form.

Brighten Up

Brighten Up is a tool intended to assist users with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) also known as seasonal depression in starting their mornings. According to the Yale School of Medicine SAD affects 0.5 to 3 percent of the US population or around ten million people. The traditional form of treatment is a  lightbox that simulates the sun's light. However, most options for a lightbox are bulky and unattractive, disincentivizing the user to keep one on hand. Brighten Ups sleek and attractive design, paired with features customizable to the user helps them to overcome the hurdles of SAD.

Brighten Up simulates the sun's natural light throughout the day using custom programmed strips of neopixels. An ultrasonic sensor determines if the user has stood in front of the project for a sufficient amount of time to help with SAD and signals they can go on with their day. Led’s illuminate icons to show the user they have completed specific tasks the day before in order to reduce the hurdles a user has to overcome and continue on with their day.

Palbot

Palbot is a robotic assistant that seamlessly documents the user’s work. At NuVu documentation of project progress is a big problem, often students forget to document their work due to its inconvenience and lack of implementation in students' workflow. There has been a consistent lack of documentation in multiple studios for many students.

Palbot will allow students to quickly and automatically photograph their progress by simply placing their project in front of Palbot. This will ensure that all students have enough material to accurately represent their studio progress. Palbot utilizes a pressure sensor to detect when an object is placed on it as well as a servo driven camera arm to focus on the object. Palbot also utilizes a strip of neopixel LEDs to express “emotion” and provide light.

Patch

Zoe Falkson

Brief:

Alex:

Some children with Autism struggle to convey their emotions to people around them. Patch, our soft plushy creature, will aid children with autism by lighting up a certain color correlating to a button with a face on it. Our project focuses on a small demographic; however it is important to assist everyone with different types of complications. Our project helps better the understanding and bond between a child with autism and their caretaker by simplifying the process of expressing their emotions. Our group has done research into what are some daily issues a person with autism goes through. We found that ⅓ of people with autism are non-verbal. Patch is easily functional and simple to understand. Patch’s stomach has six little patches that each have a face on them. Each face has a color on it which when pressed, lights the stomach the same color, making it easy to communicate your emotion.

Zoe:

A common characteristic of those on the Autism spectrum is difficulty expressing emotions. The design is a stuffed animal with color patches, where each color correlates to a different emotion. When the child presses one of the patches, a light emitted from the animal's stomach communicates the child's emotion.

Patch is designed to provide non-verbal children on the Autism spectrum with an alternative way to communicate their emotions, and to aid their caretakers in responding to their emotional states.

Patch is a stuffed animal with color patches surrounding the stomach. Each patch has a face whose color represents a specific emotion. When a child presses each patch, a button beneath the patch and connected to an Arduino causes the stomach to light up  with the color that correlates to that emotion. The caretaker will be able to see the light and identify the child's emotion. This is a direct and intuitive  way for these children to communicate how they are feeling.
