Spatial Narrative Games

Science fiction role-playing games cross several different media and bring the excitement of exploring new worlds center-stage for game players. From Destiny to Halo to Call of Duty, one of the largest science fantasy role-playing game series, fantasy games have dominated game culture for decades.

In this studio, students will program their own innovative fantasy video game using Unity, a cross-platform game engine for video game development and interactive media installations. Send the main character on an interactive virtual quest through multi-continental worlds similar to the World of Warcraft’s land of Azeroth, or design whimsical fantasy worlds like Mario’s Mushroom Kingdom, or create a hybrid sci-fi/fantasy story based in a world like Gaia from Final Fantasy VII, or transport the main character across time and a variety of Ages like in the Myst series!

Alongside the game design, students will conceptualize a storyline for the character and flex their digital art skills. After coming up with an initial idea, students will conceive the rules and structure of the game (gameplay). They will then create the game environment, levels, and missions. Finally, we will move to the production phase and bring all the elements together into a single or multi-player online game!

Throughout the game, the character slowly starts to discover the connection they have to the abandoned civilization. The goal slowly starts to become obvious, to restore the temple. The game shows the user the connection between the past and the present as the characters' memories start to slowly be restored.

Detective On The Loose

By Silv Askanase and Schuyler Johnson

Silv's brief:

Detective On The Loose is a 2D mystery game; where the player is a detective who is teleported into the house of a missing person. The goal of the game is to find out what happened. Throughout the game, as the player walks through the house, they encounter cut scenes where they discover clues. As the detective progresses through the game, they can use the clues they find to uncover new areas of the house.

Detective On The Loose is visually inspired by the traditional aesthetic of the mystery genre with muted colors throughout the house. As the player moves through the game, they hear a creepy song that adds to the mystery, and different sound effects for the different cut scenes.

Lalita:

Spirit is a flat game/ virtual world that allows the user to explore the forest and the space around them. While exploring the beauty of the outdoors, there are calming natural and whimsical sounds that accompany the user during their travels. However, the player doesn't quite have a specific identity. A mysterious glowing white orb takes form as the player, leaving it up for different interpretations while traveling through the digital world.

When entering the game, the player appears on an old tree stump before exploring the world. There is also a night and day cycle that will change perspectives on how the forest might be viewed at different times. This exploratory game shows just some of the many great things from the outdoors and is a calming experience for all ages.

----------------

Oliver:

The trees are turning colors; the air is getting colder. In Forest Game, the player explores the forest with goals to escape. There is no list of objectives but rather an open journey towards appreciating the earth. Forest Game offers an opportunity to experience the serene and calming environment in the late summer/early autumn season. Amid this exploration, the player has the choice to either stay in the woods and build a habitat, or to head home.

Calming, ambient music soundtracks the game, among the sounds of birds chirping and ferns ruffling. Bright, and sharp colors encompass the game, adding a rich contrast to the playful "sketchbook" style art. The main character is a glowing orb, which offers an ambiguous identity. This identity could represent the player of the game but can reach the limits of the player's imagination.

'Beneath Bootsoles' explores the last verse of Walt Whitman's poem Song of Myself. The player follows a path made up of text and explores animations representing the different lines of poetry. The poem explores our connection to nature; as the player views the poem and visuals, they gain a deeper understanding of the poem. The visual experience and text help the player gain a greater appreciation of our interconnection to the world around us.

The player starts the game in the sky, being untamed and loud like the birds. The player can hear footsteps as they walk down the path. As they continue walking, they can hear nature sounds. As the sun sets, the animations become more abstract as you travel down to the earth. More and more nature sounds are added until the footsteps can not be heard. By the end of the path, the player sees animations of plants growing, as they travel below the dirt.
