Fruit are Heavy

Fruit Are Heavy

Consider how many fruit trees are planted for their beauty and visual appeal, but they also produce food that would reduce food insecurity. There is typically no public service to pick the fruit; rather, it falls to the ground as food waste.

George Tech students partnered with a local non-profit that supports public food foraging to see if they could help the foragers know when fruiting trees located in community areas (like parks and roadsides) held ripe fruit. The non-profit they partnered with needed to know when to send volunteers to pick the fruit - it can be time and resource intensive to keep sending people to various locations to check.

The students developed a sensor that measured the heaviness of the branches - the heavier the branch, the riper the fruit they ventured. The sensor would then alert the non-profit organization to pick the fruit - reducing community food waste!

Carnegie Library: Seed and Plant Swap

Joselyn McDonald

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is among a growing body of libraries creating "Seed and Plant" catalogs. Just like you go to the library to check out a book, you can "check out" a packet of seeds or a small fruit or vegetable plant. However, you are not expected to return your plant or seeds, rather they encourage you to bring more seeds back the following spring for other library patrons.

Food Link

Paula Garza Gonzalez

Food Link is the bridge between retailers, distributors, and farms that have surplus food and community organizations seeking nutritious food for people in need.

Over 300 volunteers work alongside our staff to rescue food and bring it to partner organizations in the area.

Recovered food has to be effectively and rapidly linked with the people who can use it.

Food Link strives to provide fresh nutritious food to 108 recipient agencies that serve people experiencing food insecurity. Programs distributing our food include food pantries, schools, afterschool programs, senior centers, low-income housing facilities, communities of worship, veterans centers, and programs for refugees, among others. We work with each community partner to provide customized deliveries in a manner that respects cultural and dietary preferences.

Community Fridge Movement

Kate James

Community fridges are a form of mutual aid that address food insecurity in the community. Community fridges offer free food resources donated by neighbor volunteers available 24/7 and free from the usual constraints of a food bank in terms of staffing and space.

Community fridges can also help alleviate food waste, since household and local foo overflow can be reallocated to those in need without external coordination.

Urban Farming Office

Kate James

Vietnamese studio Vo Trong Nghia Architects has completed Urban Farming Office, its own head office in Ho Chi Minh City, creating a concrete-framed building covered in a "vertical farm" of vegetables, fruits and herbs.

The building is designed to tackle a host of issues: providing hyper-local food, connecting urban residents with nature, and preventing overheating with plant shading.

Notpla

Kate James

Notpla has designed a biodegradable and edible packaging, make from seaweed and plants, to replace plastic food packaging.

The resulting "pods" contain single servings of liquids or foods, with the surrounding film biodegrading naturally over a span of weeks.
