Fashion Week 2014

Boston Fashion Week 2014

Saba Ghole

There are a few fashion weeks that capture the attention of audiences worldwide, and NY Fashion is not shy of ranking at the top of that list. This Fall, NuVu made a splash at both NY and Boston Fashion Weeks with our Fantasy Nature-Tech Collection on the runway at the Emerging Trends Show. The Collection takes inspiration from nature and its fascinating and complex patterns and blends this with 3d fabrication technology. The Fantasy Nature-Tech Collection is meant to inspire, create awe, and involve fantasy by creating a sense of wonder and illusion.

Black Phoenix

Saba Ghole

Black Phoenix was showcased as part of NuVu’s Fantasy FashionTech Collection on the runway at the Emerging Trends Show during NY Fashion Week 2014 and the Emerging Trends Show during Boston Fashion Week 2014.

Black Phoenix embodies the idea of transformation and renewal. Based on the “Phoenix,” the Greek mythological bird that died in a blaze of fire only to be reborn from its ashes, Black Phoenix continually reshapes and reforms through its generative structure, compacting and stretching to form itself anew.

Exo-Lung Peacock

Shilo Shiv Suleman and Saba Ghole

Exo-Lung Peacock was showcased as part of NuVu’s Fantasy FashionTech Collection on the runway at the Emerging Trends Show during Boston Fashion Week 2014.

Peacocks are a fascinating bird type with beautiful intricate designs. They are known to symbolize peace and have no body part made for attacking. Many people know of the multicolored Peacock but few know of the Albino Peacock. Being all white and the ultimate symbol of purity, The Albino Peacock was a large part of our concept for the Exo-Lung Peacock, a darker take on the Albino Peacock. The black laser-cut plywood "feathers" on the bottom piece have intricate designs based on Peacock feathers, while the dark "Exo-Lung" captures the strength, protection, and defence characteristics of the peacock's crest.

Our inspiration of birds helped us come up with our dress design.  Peacocks are a fascinating bird type with beautiful intricate designs.  They are known to symbolize peace and they have no body part made for attacking.  Many people know of the multicolored Peacock but few know the Albino Peacock.  The Albino Peacock being all white, was a large part of our idea.  We made our feathers all white and put fiber optic cables throughout the wooden feathers.  The feathers on our dress have many intricate designs based on Peacock feathers.  In Fantasy Fashion we were brainstorming different nature-related things such as, birds, bugs, aquatic animals, elements, and many other living and non-living things.  We researched and came up with many great ideas and thoughts.  Sayed decided on Peacocks.  After eliminating some ideas we were put into groups of three and the ideas started to form into actual fashion, which happened to be mostly dresses.  Our group had many struggles with laser cutters and 3D printers but we worked hard to make our moving Peacock feathers and the other attachments.

Antlers

Vedrana Stantic and Saba Ghole

Antlers was showcased as part of NuVu’s Fantasy FashionTech Collection on the runway at the Emerging Trends Show during Boston Fashion Week 2014.

Antlers is a wearable sculpture inspired by antlers found in the deer and antelope family. Antlers explores the comparison between armor and attraction. The sculpture consists of three main pieces; the chest piece, the shoulder pieces and the antlers. Each piece is made of laser cut plywood designed in Photoshop and Rhino, then layered to create the intricate effect.

Aquatic Dress

Sofia Canale-Parola and Saba Ghole

Aquatic Dress was showcased as part of NuVu’s Fantasy FashionTech Collection on the runway at the Emerging Trends Show during Boston Fashion Week 2014.

Life in the deep sea - as in the rest of the animal kingdom - is all about two things: survival and reproduction. In order to succeed in these two feets, animals play a dance between protection and attraction. Aquatic Dress takes us back to these basic roots and channels the energies of the ocean into an interesting and wearable outfit. Aquatic Dress examines the roots of humanity and looks to create something beautiful that is inspired by these ideas.

Crystal Dress

Saba Ghole

Crystal Dress was showcased as part of NuVu’s Fantasy FashionTech Collection on the runway at the Emerging Trends Show during Boston Fashion Week 2014.

The ultimate goal of this dress was tying nature into fashion and to represent the formation of crystals through a dress. The triangular formations on the dress are created out of mirrored acrylic and screwed onto a felt base. The dress is a great representation of the crystals formed in nature, brought to a modern, sleek environment like fashion week.

By creating the dress, we are showing people that nature can be brought into fashion. Not only does this dress display crystals but it also makes a statement. When people first hear about a dress made out of screws and acrylic, it may not come across as the most attractive piece of clothing, but this dress changes that perception. When it was worn at fashion week by our model, Natalia, it was a very different piece of clothing from everything else that was shown during our show: Boston Fashion Week's Emerging Trends.

This project was important to us because we were inspired by the idea of crystals, minerals and rocks. Although the dress does not represent the minerals and rocks as much as the initial sketch had shown, the dress accomplishes all of the goals we had. Through lots of prototyping and many different dresses, this was the final product that we could not have been happier with.
