Cyborg Enhancements 2020

Rosa Weinberg

Session 3: Aug 3-14, 2020

With modern advances, it is now common to see robots that run like animals, humans with superhuman senses, remote control cockroaches, and fantastical virtual worlds as rich and complex as the real world. New advances are creating smarter prostheses that allow individuals to use technology to become MORE than human. Individuals on the avant-garde of human-machine implants can see sound, hear colors, and sense north. With these technological advances, humans can become cyborgs who have the potential to experience the world in ways unimaginable to unaltered humans. What are the possibilities for superhuman cyborgs, and how can you envision yourself as a future cyborg?

In this studio, we will explore the creation of human-cyborg enhancements. Students will work with experts in prosthetics, robotics, and future visioning. They will learn from cyborgs pioneers like Neil Harbisson, who has a sensor to help him see color, Moon Ribas, who can feel earthquakes, and Kevin Warwick, who is on a mission to become the world’s first complete cyborg. Why sit back and let the future happen when you can be part of creating that future?

We will look at the fundamentals of mechatronics and use microprocessor electronics, 3D modeling software, and prototyping techniques to design, build and activate enhancements. What was once a theory is becoming a fantastic reality which we will explore through our cyborg creations!
