Summer 2014 - Go Fantasy!

Our academic school year might be finished in early summer but NuVu will not close down. On the contrary, NuVu's team will be busy and bring back our Summer Camp Studios to you in July and August 2014. The theme will be Fantasy!

Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, Avatar, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory…These stories have taken over our imaginations and filled our thoughts with magical worlds, whimsical creatures, and supernatural phenomena. Fantasy creates a vivid space in our minds and hearts that allows us to freely imagine possibilities and stories that may exist one day, or remain in our imaginations for a long time to come. Many aspects of fantasy take inspiration from ancient mythology and folklore, but what types of fantasy worlds, objects, games, vehicles, and fashion do you imagine when mixed with modern-day technologies, myths, and gadgetry?

Students will dive into a multitude of topics surrounding the Fantasy theme, stretching their imaginations and gaining valuable knowledge and skills along the way. NuVu's students will learn about Engineering, Computer Programming, Electronics, Fashion Design, and Filmmaking. They will be designing, programming and building robots, creating digital art and animation, designing and fabricating clothing garments, and inventing new toys.

In each studio, students will be pushed out of their comfort zone, and will stretch their creative limits to come up with something they have never done before. Students will get inspired and inspire each other to develop social, problem solving and technology skills. Students will work in collaborative teams under the guidance of our coaches, who are professional experts and academics at MIT. The studios are inspired by cutting-edge research and inventions from research institutes, universities as well as the vibrant technology and design industries.

The Summer 2014 program is open to youth, ages 11-17.  Studio enrollment is limited.

Jumping as an Art

Saba Ghole

Jumping as an Art from NuVu Studio on Vimeo.

"Jumping as an Art" is a video produced by NuVu students that relates to the topic of flying. Humans have forever been advancing in the art of flight through technology and other structures. This video relates to flight in the sense that humans' closest connection to flight, without any other external forces contributing to it, is the act of jumping. Not only does this video show examples of jumping in artistic ways, but it incorporates metaphorical acts of movement to emphasize human conception.

Making News in Louisiana

Saba Ghole
NuVu Studio was making news and creative ripples last week in Louisiana after our first week-long Summer "Games and Magic" workshop at Episcopal High School in Baton Rouge. Here are two stories on NuVu; one posted in Louisiana's newspaper The Advocate and the other that aired on WAFB, Louisiana's news channel: "Creativity Shapes Competition, The Advocate, June 18, 2011 "Mechanical Men," WAFB, June 17, 2011:

My Solar System

A post by one of our students, Owen Canavan: One of the things we were shown on the first Monday of the space mining studio was a

This program can also be used for creating interesting patterns, in this case three objects were used, one in the center acting as a sun, with two others going around it slowly changing their position with each orbit, eventually when they each go half way around the center point, a circle is clearly visible.

The more objects there are in the simulation, the more complex the patterns can become. In this case, there are four objects, all of the same mass, creating two rings going through each other.

Another interesting thing is the effect of altering one variable. In this case the mass of each object is set to 120.

In this picture, I have changed nothing but the mass of the objects, from 120 to 60. The pattern is still visible, but it is clearly different.

The UNaverage: Curly Cakes

Saba Ghole
Photos by Ginny Hollingsworth When the time came for me to identify a topic for this project, I thought about the concept of being average. I thought about my peers and the contrast between those who barely scratch the surface of their potential and those who so blatantly stand apart from the rest in terms of their personal successes. Then it dawned on me, why capture the average, when I could just as easily capture the exceptionally UNaverage? Isabelle English is a 17-year-old owner and proprietor of her own business. She juggles school, friends, and a brand new cupcake shop on lively Charles Street in Boston, all while maintaining a sense of grace and composure. She is, in and of herself, the opposite of average, and it is that which I hope to capture.

The Business of Sustainability

Saba Ghole
Film by Harry Bachrach, Liza Cooper, Nima Olumi A piece produced by NuVu Students, this short documentary looks at the meaning of sustainability in the world of business at MIT's Sloan School of Management. Current Sloan Sustainability Certificate Program students and professors talk about the significance of sustainability in the world of professional practice. Film Synopsis: We are in the midst of a global crisis. Economic collapse, dwindling natural resources, man-made environmental disasters and unprecedented population growth are among the causes of our present unsustainable situation. This short video will examine several of these problems by gathering expert opinions from the Sloan School at MIT. Students and faculty of the Sloan School are leading developers of innovative educational programs aimed at preventing the current crisis situation from getting worse and reversing the damage that has already occurred through better sustainability practices.

Two Hours Before the Review

Saba Ghole
Here is a short clip documenting the two-hour building frenzy before the review of the Do-It-Yourself Studio. This is becoming a typical scene of the last day of every studio at NuVu. Jeff, Zoz, and David were moving between the teams to help them put the finishing touches on their projects.

Testing the NuScoo

Saba Ghole
Jake, Neddy, and AJ have been busy building their NuScoo. Inspired by the Segway, NuScoo is controlled by an accelerometer that the driver controls with his hand. Students are currently working on making it wireless. We are still trying to figure out how to drive this thing. It is a lot of fun because of its amazing responsiveness but it is not so safe. We will be adding more features to it to make it safer and easier to drive. Stay Tuned!!!!
