Determination

Saba Ghole
Video and Photos by Alex Jacobs and Jake LiBassi Many people who watch Sports, only see the final result of what takes place during games. However, for all these athletes, there is much more that goes into it. While each sport is only one season, individuals work year round to improve their strength and skills. In this story, we look at the determination of these athletes to improve themselves. We see athletes working extra hours and pushing their limits. We see the pain of injured players itching to return and the reward of success as the ball drops through the net.

NuVu in the Boston Globe

Callum Borchers, Reporter at the Boston Globe, was our guest in December 2013. NuVu's students proudly presented their work and shared their experience  with him. Callum left with many new impressions for his article ; and he also "raved" about NuVu during the "Week in Review" show at WBUR.

Callum's Boston Globe article is available here; describing how NuVu students tackle building everything from robots to their own footwear...

Quote from Beaver Country School's FAQ section on NuVu (http://bcdschool.org/academics/nuvu-faqs/)

"Even before Beaver students began pilot participation in NuVu in the Spring of 2010, Director of College Counseling Peter Gow communicated with all colleges and universities to which Beaver students have applied in the last decade, describing the NuVu program and soliciting reactions. Responses from colleges were uniformly favorable, with many echoing the words of the admission officer who called NuVu an “incredible opportunity for Beaver students.” Another wrote that “this program aligns well with what we look for in our applicants: a high level of motivation, self-initiated academic challenge, and academic adventures that push students beyond a comfort zone.” Still another summed up his college’s approval by stating, “We would certainly look upon the experience favorably during the admissions review.”

Cradle to Cradle

Nanotechnology studio coach Dr. Ryan Wartena shares his thoughts on Days 5 & 6 of the studio. "Nanotechnology of Growing Architecture" studio by Dr. Ryan Wartena 9/29/10 By the end of the 5th day of the NuVu NANOGA studio all were successful in generating their own unique version of Metatron's cube, an exercise that most never attempt and those who do take years to complete. We spent Day 6 of the studio in deep discussion of full cycle processes and the NANOGA circularly critiqued each others 'cradle to cradle' interpretation of existing systems. During the critique we collectively developed intentional Seed Technologies to apply nanotechnology, growth processes and integrated locality. The projects include: A computational-bacterial bio-reactor to home recycle plastic bottles into any form Two clothing recycle processes where fibers are crystallized into building materials and new clothing patterns Two methods of growing buildings, one is a method of growing a new house from old houses with bone and vegetation architectures and the other grows skyscrapers from avocados (and returns as an avocado grove) A return to the Earth shoebox that makes plants from shoes An iPhone processing tree (that grows more Apples) Two integrated food cycles, one for the combination of grains and berries to generate corn and a mega-seed to generate a carrot cake, in form And a neural imagination seed

On Government: Public Data, Policy and Perspectives

Saba Ghole

An interactive game based on mobilty on demand, new medical technologies, an interactive installation on modern slavery, a hologram machine, a smart intersection, an online platform showcasing multiple perspectives, and a proposal for re-concepting a city-focused website - these were the many projects on display at NuVu's Spring Government Exhibit this past Sunday. The event brought together a crowd of over 150 people who came to explore the many projects and talk with the students who had worked on them over the past three months at NuVu. The variety of projects showcased at the exhibit were based around the theme of the term, "Government," and illustrated the many viewpoints into a complex topic and the diverse approaches students used to explore issues or problems related to government that are not usually seen or discussed. The exhibit showcased different ways to engage communities and spread understanding, whether through sensor-guided interactive data collection or through interactive visualizations of large bodies of data generated from social media sites such as Twitter.

We were super lucky today to have

Here is a clip of the documentary "Shape of the Moon". After that, we spent the last few hours making a low-cost version of the steady wings. We got all the parts from Home Depot.

Film by Najwa Aswad, Neddy Beckwith, and Jay Rodman "Kendall Square: A Renovated Community" is a short documentary on the Kendall Square area in Cambridge, MA and it's local businesses. To give the audience a few different perspectives, the documentary focuses on interviews from employees and owners at The Kendall Hotel, the Kendall Square Flower Shop and the MIT Book Press. Tying all of these interviews together are the words of Joe Tulimieri, an executive director at the Cambridge Redevelopment Authority. Joe explains how his office deals with the constant change of Kendall Square and how local businesses have managed to stay afloat in the current economic climate.

It's Friday, It's Friday...

It's Friday, it's Friday, it's review & presentation day at NuVu! What a Friday it was. Leading up to Friday, we had a closed reflection circle, thinking about where we had been the past two weeks, and appreciating this moment of coming together to create something. It was a moment to cherish, and we did. The final reviews of the term ended in a spectacular finish. NuVu student Robert Alper was on the decks, making sure the sound flow for the day was smooth and flowing. Adam Steinberg and Jeff Marx (with Raghava KK there in spirit) marked the start of the two studio presentations, and within each session, there was an abundant supply of electronic audio collages, viral video parodies and laughter, and an overall journey filled with learning. Full house for Review/Presentation Day
