Project Paragraph

Lo-Fi Prototyping

During this studio, we partnered with the discovery museum to design an exhibit for an area they are hoping to develop further. To focus our efforts, we chose a theme centered around space, considering its vast potential for fostering learning opportunities and igniting the imagination. Knowing this, we set our learning goals to be independence, curiosity, and space knowledge. In order to achieve these learning goals, we thought about the implementation of scale, sensory experience, and freedom. During the first week of studio, we iterated concepts through sketches, and did research to get a good scope of what makes an effective children's exhibit. During the second week of studio, we focused on lo-fi prototyping and began play testing. On the third week, we began higher fidelity prototyping which lead into out final play test. The last week involved consolidating all of our insights to finalize our design into blue prints to propose to the discovery museum.

Growth Paragraph

Designing for a children's exhibit is not something I would decide to do on my own time, making this studio a perfect opportunity gain knowledge from unique experiences. For example, prior to this studio, I had not at all been exposed to client work and how those relationships are navigated. It also exposed me to a new dimension of design: focusing on artistic aesthetics for visual appeal rather than pure functionality. Because of the abstract nature in how design requirements were defined, deciding on a direction and finding motivation took a little bit of getting used to. I've learned the importance of embracing any guidance on direction, avoiding the paralysis of over-questioning. Some other notable skills I improved on include project management, and presentation techniques.
