Celebration of Life

Silvia and Trevor

The Celebration of Life is a yearly festival to rejoice in nature and the abundance of life on Earth. Every year, a pine tree is cut down, and each part of the tree is used for a different phase of the celebration. One part of the ritual is making and sharing pine needle tea. Each family has a tea set that is passed down from the older generations and contains a knife, tea cup, and hand embroidered tea bag. Through a process of gathering pine needles and boiling water, the tea is made in a traditional way, that helps the people feel closer to nature.

We created a hat for the people up in the "Flower Towers" to shield them from the harsh sun up in the world, since it's above the clouds, but also to remind them of the weather in the city below them just because they don't get to experience that. Our final project is a snow hat that is made to represent icicles, snow globes, and snowflakes.

Thesis

In this world, a mask is a representation of who you are. Your job is decided at birth, and you are trained such that your personality is stripped away and you become your job. Every day, people are moved around in housing to squash revolution. The coal miner mask is chosen due to the history of coal mining being an unsafe job, the random assignment of jobs is an allegory for the uncontrollable life situations leading someone to work in a job that harms them, and the personality being stripped away parallels the idea in the real world that individuality does not exist in jobs.

The Light

In the world that we've created, there is a direct class separation between the rich and the poor, as the poor live beneath the rich and fund their expenditures. Since the rich live so high up in the atmosphere, they block out most sunlight, and the poor don't have enough money for electricity. Our project focused on a product that we designed as a radioactive light that the poor would use as their main light source. The light would be held on the hand or as a necklace, to easily bring it around as well as keep it safe. It would also have a storage space at their houses to hold the light and amplify it while at home.
