SkiHUD is a quality of life heads-up display system designed to improve and simplify the lives of skiers and snowboarders alike. The internal projection system allows its users to view vital information such as speed, time, altitude and location using a bearing system specifically designed for SkiHUD. SkiHUD’s built-in camera allows for increased spatial awareness. When the SkiHUD system is used in low visibility or blizzard conditions, it uses augmented reality to highlight changes in the trail path, obstacles, and dangerous terrain. All of this information is provided conveniently in the goggles for safety and ease of use.
As avid skiers and snowboards, SkiHUD’s developers experience a lack of these features frequently. It’s a common occurrence for crashes, collisions and injuries to occur when trying to check a mobile device for information, or at its most basic, unavoidable visibility issues. SkiHUD set out to solve these problems.
SkiHUD can be split into two main parts: The helmet, and the goggles. The goggles contain 3 screens to display information as well as the screens drivers. These two things produce the interface section of SkiHUD. The helmet contains all other necessary electronic components to produce a simple and streamlined final product, including but not limited to Arduino nanos, a Raspberry pi 4, and a Berry-gps in order to take measurements. All of these pieces together provide an all-in-one solution to the biggest and most dangerous problems in snow sports.
