Our story explores the idea of diversity and being different, without using a direct way of showing it. We wanted to to show the tough topic of diversity by submerging it into this fun and joyful story and using characters that are animals and not people.
In history, race and diversity has always been an issue throughout the world, and it's never more relevant than now. Treating people as equals no matter who they are is very important and we want to teach children using our book, while also giving them a fun experience that they'll always remember. Starting off our project, we originally wanted to put the story into a classroom setting, as many others do as well, so that they can relate more with the young reader. We then decided that we wanted more of a challenge and not to make it the classic children's story. We wanted to make something new. Our story became much more silly and fun, but we also still laid the underlying topic of diversity, subliminal enough where the child sees it, but doesn't have the exact answer. When it came to the illustrations, we wanted to mix and match with different medias. When visiting the Cambridge library, most of us were drawn to the books with those vibrant colors but smooth and sometimes rough textures. We wanted to create that same experience. For each page, there are different medias, going from oil pastels, water colors and more. With the detailed and thought out illustrations together with this immense and captivating story, our book will give families the ability to talk about race and differences, while also having a great and memorable experience.
