I made two objects representing two memories that are tied to my identity.

Final Models

This project is about creating a "vessel" that represents both a memory and a part of my identity. Both of my creations have to do with nature and the feeling it evokes, but they have some differences. One is about the inanimate things in nature, like plants and fungi, and a feeling of fascination and wonder. The other is about animals, and the feeling of awe when you see an animal in the wild.

These objects are less of a representation of one specific memory, and more of a collection of memories that are all similar to each other. They are supposed to evoke fascination, and represent the part of me that loves nature.

This object is representative of a specific memory, and is meant to evoke the feelings that I experienced in the memory and kind of recreate the scene of the memory itself. It stands for my interest in and love of animals.

Concept Development

The projects were meant to portray the various feelings you experience while perceiving nature; while there’s no “right” answer to said feelings, the ones they were aiming to evoke were wonder, awe, fascination, and intimidation. The first project was a collection of mushrooms made from tissue paper. These were based off of my experiences observing mushrooms in the forest behind my backyard. They were meant to be something that would be interesting to look at, that fascinated people. This was accomplished by making them visually appealing and including a variety of different mushrooms to catch attention. The second project was the silhouette of an elk in a box with backlighting softened by tissue paper. It was based on  a memory of encountering an elk in the woods when I was young, and was meant to evoke awe and intimidation, to try to capture the memory in such a way so that people can experience the moment for themselves.

I think I improved a lot over the course of this studio. I grew much more comfortable around people, and collaborated with them: giving and receiving feedback and advice, talking about the projects, etc. Over time, my prototypes became more true to the ideas that I wanted to express. My sketches and drawings also became much more clear and less cluttered the further I got into my projects. That also ties in with concept development, since my work became more refined/developed the more time I put into it.
