Inspiration

As a group comprised of skiers and snowboarders, we wanted to explore different ways to make skiing and riding more enjoyable and safer. Specifically, we wanted to improve way finding, obstacle detection and make skiing more entertaining overall. After three weeks of design, coding and innovation we created SkiHUD.

Thesis

SkiHUD is a quality of life heads-up display system designed to improve and simplify the lives of skiers and snowboarders alike. The internal projection system allows its users to view vital information such as speed, time, altitude and location using a bearing system specifically designed for SkiHUD. The system also utilizes advanced machine learning techniques to identify and highlight potential hazards, providing skiers with an unparalleled level of situational awareness and ensuring a safer, more enjoyable experience on the slopes.

Google Glass & Microsoft HoloLens

In terms of UI, Google Glass is a great works-like prototype for our group to use because of its simple interface. Microsoft's HoloLens is a great technical prototype, as it uses the same method of projection that SkiHUD uses.

REKKIE Smart Snow Goggles

REKKIE's Smart Snow goggles is the precedent that is most like our product. It has a HUD, and many features that we want to implement into our own design. On the other side of things, they're UI leaves something to be desired.

The first iteration of SkiHUD utilized a transparent OLED screen behind a lens, allowing the user to see data collected by a BerryGPS. This prototype displayed altitude, bearing and temperature, as well as speed and time. However, the display and lens blocked a large portion of the user’s vision and was fragile. The display was also external, which exposed critical electronics to the elements.

SkiHUD incorporates a simple heads up display by reflecting images off of a ski visor. This was a major improvement, as our prior prototype relied on an exterior lens.

The two lower screens in our prototype incorporate an Enhanced Awareness prototype that highlights potential obstacles and hazards in all conditions. Currently, we are the only group to pioneer this technology.
