Supplemental Coursework

Supplemental Coursework

Juliette Noone

NuVu families,

With the second half of the school year approaching, I wanted to share some info that might help as you're considering options for supplemental coursework.

First, here's an updated summary of the course providers that have been most popular with NuVu students over the past couple of years:

  • Virtual High School
    • VHS "credit recovery" courses (which are no longer named "flex" courses) continue to be the most popular choice, although a few of our students have had negative experiences.
  • Khan Academy
    • Free, self-paced courses in a variety of disciplines. Content is mostly delivered through videos.
  • Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth
    • CTY courses are particularly rigorous and require that students qualify before enrolling.
  • Blue Tent Online
    • NuVu students have had mostly good experiences with their math, science and English courses.
  • Academy of Art University
    • A nice selection of free art and design courses are available through their PCAE program.
  • Art of Problem Solving
    • Rigorous math and science courses that have gotten good reviews from students who are looking for a challenge.
  • Harvard Extension School
    • A wide range of in-person and online (both synchronous and asynchronous) courses for students who are at least 15 years old.
  • Outlier
    • Earn credits through University of Pittsburgh. Reviews from NuVu students have been mixed.
  • Outschool
    • A network of tutors offering a variety of courses. Some NuVu students have had very negative experiences, so I'm inclined to discourage this option.

Second, I want to remind you that whatever approach NuVu students take to supplemental coursework, I'll do my best to support them all. The most common plan continues to look like this: one math course during the first half of the school year, one English course during the second half of the school year and one science course over the summer. That said, NuVu families take many different approaches to supplemental coursework; it's clear that this isn't a community where a "one size fits all" system is appropriate.

If you have questions related to supplemental coursework, you're always welcome to email them to me and/or request a phone/Zoom meeting.

Best,

Rob
