NuVu Students in Monterrey Mexico Field Testing Products--Day 5

1 / 20

Friday was our favorite day. Dr. Consuelo Ibarra invited us to the weekly drum circle, an inspiring way to begin our big presentation day. We drummed together, following the beat of the three Nuevo Amanecer leaders in the center of the circle. At one point, they created a "fire" out of painted bottles as a way of ridding the group of negatives (Greed, War, Hunger, Suffering, Tomatoes) and creating positives. After the drum circle, we had an hour to prepare for the presentations. Adrian Llaguno, an architectural photographer, began photographing the projects while the Arte Para Todos team did some last minute adjustments in the courtyard with the help of industrial designers, Tomás, Gris and Laura. A reporter from El Norte, Neuvo Leon's largest newspaper, stopped by to interview the teams and then the presentations began.

Noah and Devin kicked it off with Abraham and the Skills Vest, the mothers and Dr. Consuelo Ibarra and the physical therapist were impressed with the new toys, and Abraham was very engaged with the different activites the vest presented. Next up was Arte Para Todos who worked with Brian, a young man who had given up drawing because of difficulties with grip. Arte Para Todos was able to allow him to draw, and he began working on a cat house and his name. Brian's excitement over his new ability to draw was one of the most moving experience of the whole week. The Fashionable Lift Vest was also a huge success, Sam and Tomás had carefully color-coded the weight bearing straps with purple and grey fabric and added padding to the back and shoulders. Last up was the wheelchair, Isaac eagerly sat for a ride up and down powered by a few of the mothers. The mothers agreed that this would be very helpful for older children. The presentations concluded and we all took the rest of the afternoon off to relax.
