Inclusive-Census Redesign

By Rajveer P.

Rajveer's Brief -

Discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community in India and around the world is widespread and rampant.

Gender and sexuality were fluid ideas in ancient India, but when Britain colonized the country, they imposed the binary, and the consequences can still be seen today.

This erasure starts at the root–the census–the form designed to capture as many Indians as possible in contributing to the erasure of many of them. In the 2011 form, there was no regard for one’s gender; only the question of sex was posed to respondents. There are no intentions to introduce this in the upcoming 2022 census, either. How can we expect the lives of countless LGBTQIA+ folks to get better if the government has chosen to be wilfully ignorant of the community?

This project takes place in a small Indian town. It includes two sets of graphs and "utopia"-based maps that contrast the current fixed system of solely asking about one's gender with a hopeful inclusive future in which all genders are included in the census. Future goals for this project include finishing modeling sexuality for the same and using the data from both to drive a national census redesign on a wider scale.
