Hi I'm Christina and I'm Sebastian, and this is the Climbing Soft Sloth.
Sometimes you lose your belongings in trees or need to reach the top for research but they have very jagged geometry with no branches. Regular robots may injure the tree or may break, and people may not be able to climb the tree.
We decided to create a sloth-like soft robot that can adapt to the shape of a tree and can climb up it with artificial muscles.

We were inspired by multiple animals, and we based our movement design on the motion of a sloth and the spine motion of an inchworm.
We also based our hands off the specific design of the FESTO fish tail gripper, which is basically a flexible structure that adapts to the shape of what it's pushed against. [quote from FESTO.]
This is a digital version of one of our first sketches. You can see that these are the fish tail grippers, these are the arm muscles, and this is the spine. [point to each body part]
These are the iterations of our robot. You can see that we started out with a cardboard model to give a preview of the shape of the robot.
This is the first iteration of our spine with the muscle balloon.
