Are you ready to join rocket scientists and engineers to design the next rocket mission? This Summer, we’ll be lifting off to outer space! You’ll have the opportunity to build and launch your own rocket while learning about all the systems and components of designing a rocket launch. Working in a highly diverse team, students will be tasked with the design of the control systems for the mission, the design and engineering of the rocket, and overseeing the subsystems and instruments of the rocket. Let’s get ready to blast off!
In this Studio, students will design a comprehensive rocket mission that will take their rockets high into the sky above. Each student will assume the role of a designer-engineer-rocket scientist focused on the R&D, design, and engineering of all of the subsystems of the mission including navigation, control, power, propulsion, structures, payloads, ground segment and launch vehicle. Together, students will experience the iterative and exploratory process of engineering a complex rocket mission. We will start with basic lessons on the math and physics that govern the design and flight of rockets, and then focus on aerodynamics (forces that are generated and act on a rocket as it flies through the air) and thermodynamics (energy and work of system). We will end with a mission that is out of this world!
