Home Assistants - Robotics

Studio Introduction
In this studio, students will learn beginner to intermediate robotics skills to design autonomous robots that address assistive issues in our homes. The studio will begin with a series of exercises and readings that provide background on the field of robotics, and help us consider how robots will evolve as a result of new technologies like generative AI. In the first week, students will learn about robot components like servos, motors, cameras, sensors, and signaling in order to build a robot to compete in an autonomous vehicle challenge. Students will also venture into deeper mathematics behind the movement of a robot, including forward kinematics and function inversion.
Once a foundation of robotics has been established, students will brainstorm ideas about how robots can serve us in our homes as assistants, especially when we are solving for a mobility or accessibility challenge. Final projects in this studio will include prototypes for assistive technologies in homes with accessibility needs. Students will produce a written report detailing the design decisions, constraints, kinematics and aspirations for the robot.
