Background: Noh ( Nō) is an old form of theatre art that is still performed today. Tales of supernatural beings are told from traditional Japanese literature accompanied by dance and music.

An interesting component of Noh theatre is the use of masks and stylized gestures that convey emotions. They are often asymmetrical so that one mask may show several different expression changes with a tilting of the head. These masks open up an experience of transformation and spectacle.

Prompt: As an introductory exercise, you’ll work in pairs to create a transformation mask that tells the story of a supernatural being and how they acquired their power.

  • In the “Response” tab, submit documentation photos of your mask with captions.
  • Include 2 inspiration images with captions.
  • In the text field, describe the story of your mask

The finished mask should be able to express 3 different transitions or changes- this can be different moods, stages, scale, etc. The mask should be worn and performed.
