Anthropocene | ˈanTHrəpəˌsēn | adjective relating to or denoting the current geological age, viewed as the period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.
Humans have been leaving traces and artifacts behind for thousands of years. The Earth's crust is constantly drilled for precious fuels, lakes and rivers drained or re-routed. Most of all, humans have churned out trillions of plastic, electronics and all sorts of technofossils that now make up the geologic record. These are the relics of the anthropocene; preserved and petrified impressions of the human age.
Today, you will scavenge and collect materials around you that capture the 'traces of our time'. Whether that's plastic bottles caps, scraps of laser-cut wood or rubber bands- you will creatively congeal them to be preserved as geological information. We will go over different materials and methods for quick casting and molding including modeling clay, coffee grounds and flour, rockite, etc.
Make sure that each piece:
- tells a unique story or narrative
- does not exceed 3" x 3" x 3"
- composed of interesting found materials and objects
- incorporates interesting techniques such as layering, crushing, coloring, sculpting, etc.
