Modular Design

Kate James

In Session 2 we thought about two ideas:

-Modular design: how small, repetitive elements can add up to a larger design proposition.

-Habitation: what makes a space inhabitable. We made a list together of features: ventilation, enclosure, access to resources like food and water, waste systems.

We challenged our older students to not only create an inhabitable space with a modular element, but to design and make the element itself. This could involve cutting or assembling materials, drawing in Illustrator and laser cutting their shape, or cutting materials in the shop to make building blocks. They then used these elements/ blocks to create a model of an inhabitable space.
