Pearson Innovation Conference

Klara Ingersoll

Innovators from all backgrounds representing Pearson Education came to NuVu today as part of their Internal Summit. We shared lunch followed by a tour around the studio and a chance to see (and play with) student’s projects. Concluding with a panel, our interns asked questions about current education and communicated our own experiences at NuVu.

Innovation Camp for Educators

Saba Ghole

This Summer, we will be running an Innovation Camp for Educators! During the camp, we will be sharing our studio methodology, and participants will have the opportunity to consult with our passionate team on how the methodology can be applied to:

  • Design Studios, Innovation Labs, Maker Spaces
  • School Programs (STEM, STEAM, Project-based Learning, Global Leadership, Design Technology)
  • Curricular Areas (Math, Science, Art, Robotics, etc.)

Included in the Innovation Camp is a 3-day Mini-Studio where participants will experience the studio model first-hand while gaining a working understanding of the skills, tools, media and professional level software we use at NuVu.

We highly encourage small teams (5 members and more) from schools to attend together.

The Innovation Camp for Educators will be taking place Monday, June 22 to Friday, June 26, 2015.

NuVu students spent the morning with industrial design students from Monterrey Tec working through the changes the students are planning to make in response to the feedback from physical therapists and users at Instituto Nuevo Amanecer. The students worked hard together during the morning and into the early afternoon and then spent the late afternoon at MARCO, the contemporary art museum. We were delighted to find a very impressive exhibit of Stanley Kubrick’s work. As we were planning to leave the museum Javier spotted Lance Wyman, most famous as the graphic designer for the 1968 Mexico Olympics. These Olympics were the inspiration behind the proposal NuVu students made in the Boston as an Olympic City studio in the Fall of 2014. We tried to convince him to come to Tec tomorrow, an unsuccessful venture unfortunately, but he suggested that we come to his lecture that evening. We went on a brief tour of Monterrey’s beautiful downtown and then returned to the museum to see Lance Wyman speak about his path into graphic design. To top it off we went to a Rey del Cabrito, a goat restaurant as famous for its kitsch as for its food.

Kicking off with Fantasy Animation!

Klara Ingersoll

We've just had an epic two days of brainstorming with the Fantasy Animation Studio. It is led by artist Shilo Shiv Suleman, a former NuVu coach visiting from India, and creator of interactive story book app Khoya. We've discussed the phases of childhood fantastical thinking, deconstructed The Hero's Journey, important plot points, and the archetypes of our favorite fantasy stories. We are now putting together our plot, worlds, characters, and thinking about how we can make it into a really awesome interactive storybook.  We are looking forward to making even more progress.

Fantasy Toys Studio: Group Profile

Klara Ingersoll

Ben Costa, Arlo Sims and Everett Collins are prototyping a toy that resembles a Rube Goldberg inspired contraption made to appeal to children.  The team has drafted pages of designs in a matter of days. They are currently prototyping various components of the toy which is comprised of different animals. One element is inspired by an octopus and another by a tropical bird. In the final design, the animals will be modular components that will fit together in a multitude of different ways enabling a child to create their own story by arranging the pieces.  So far the octopus is the only component that is nearing final.  More updates to come on this exciting and promising project!

Fantasy Motorcycle Studio: Group Profile

Joseph Randles

The Dinosaur Killing Machine is a frightening device made to eradicate the world of even the most fierce T-Rex.  Designed by Carter McDivitt and Graham Galts, it is a hubless motorcycle that uses four spinning blades to keep moving. Unlike most motorcycles, this machine has the ability to drive on any side.  It is still in development, however, once completed it will put all dinosaur related fears to rest.

Final Day Before Presentations!

Klara Ingersoll

The students of the final session of the Summer are finishing up their pojects!  It has been a privilage to see the studios develop as students quickly master the tools needed to create their projects.  Especially those who stayed for multiple sessions. The projects are turning out tremendously well, though there are some final touches that need to be made.  Be sure to come by tomorrow to see presentations at 1pm!  The address is 450 Massachusetts Ave and all are welcome.

WIRED featured some of our students' projects created as part of the "Hacking Wheelchairs for Urbanity" studio from the Fall "Cities" Term. Check out the in-depth story on how one student's challenges in a wheelchair helped ignite other students to think creatively about affordable add-ons to existing wheelchairs.
