Reinvisioning Traditional Games - Brazil

Pular Corda Presentation

Jade Bacherman

Pular Corda, or what we know as jumping rope, is a world wide popular game consisting of a rope swinging over head and under the feet of the "jumper" or "jumpers". It is extremely popular in Brazil especially towards the younger generations. My simplified version of Pular Corda consists of two motors and a wire that is bent into a jump rope shape. A 'U' shape. The two motors will be attatched to the wire spinning it like they are two people turning a jump rope. There will also be a "jumper". In this version the jumper will be a ball. The jump rope is on this type of floor that has a spring underneath it making it bouncy. There will be a piece that comes out further for the player to sort of tap to make the bball bounce and go over the jump rope!

In this game, you control a miniature kite with a spool of string on a track and your goal is to cut down your opponent's kite while both of your kites are flying above a fan.

Players muct be able to keep their kite in the fan zone so that it stays up in the air and they must watch out for the other player's kite.
Players can move their kite up and down, ascend and decsend, and use any strategy withtin the rules to win.
Players can hit eachother's kites witht heir own and cut the line of the kites.
The game is replayable because you just have to restart the fan to begin.
The game is fair
The game is all about hand-eye coordination along with staying in the fan ring

In my game, I thought of simulate the lift a kite would get in the air by using a fan. The idea That I though of was partialy inspired from air hockey. I would have a board with a fan in the center and off to the sides of it would be little tracks that would move hand cranked spools of string down. You can move the spool up and down the track as well as rotate it. You can increase or decrease the altitude of the kite by cranking out more string from the spool while moving it. I created this out of cardboard and wooden dowels along with using hot glue and electrical tape to keep everything in place. This captures the essence of kite fight because it gives you the control that flying a kite would be like and it is two person. I did not include to cut down and capture aspect of thsi game because I think it would be too dificult to inplment beace you would have to reattach the kite each time you cut it down. overall I would say I was slightly sucessfull at capturing the essence of this game beacuse I was able to control the kites but the fan made them flap all around with is not what it is like in kite fighting. I would advance the project further by making a new version made out of wood with presice measurments, and I would also try to get a better fan. Another Way I could advance it is to have customizable kites. I might also try to add some sort of funnel to control the airflow of the fan.

Sandboarding Presentation

Evy Dibble

Sand boarding is a sport that takes places on beach's sand dunes or in desert areas where a rider's feet is straped onto a rounded board  in which both legs are strapped on. It is considered to be more of a sport than game.

To represent sand boarding in a miniature, physical way, I created a sloped track that the board can glide down.

Corrida de Canoa - Presentation

Julian Slama

My game is two players that have to move their boats out of the way of obstacles.

The challenges that the players face are obstacles. The aspects of the original game that I didn't include are water, and tracks. Players cannot do anything to affect each other. The game does not have very much replay value because it has no change what so ever. The game is fair. The essence of the game is that the player must maneuver a boat around obstacles.

I don't know what the rules of the original game are. I did not include and such. I'm not what the essence of the original is.

Corrida de Argolinha Presentation

Janice Tabin

In Corrida de Argolinha, people compete to catch an overhanging ring on the end of their spear while on horseback. To imitate the immense hand-eye coordination, balance, and skill needed to be successful at this sport, I created a game where players guide their piece along the track, and try to align their spear with the ring with out touching the arch or the hoop.

Finishing physical games

Andrew Todd Marcus

1. A 1-2 sentence description of your game.

2. Answers to the 6 questions for your game:

  • 1. What are the challenges the player(s) face?
  • 2. What actions can they take to overcome those challenges?
  • 3. What can players do to affect each other?
  • 4. Is the game replayable many times without becoming "just the same" over and over?
  • 5. Is the game fair?
  • 6. What is the "essence" of the game? (low level eg. skills, high level eg concepts-ideas)

3. A diagram of how your game works. This can be hand drawn or in illustrator. Remember the points we discussed in the presentations.

4. 3-4 sentences describing how you adapted the original game you researched into your new game. Be sure to include:

  • what rules you brought over
  • what aspects of the game you did not include
  • An analysis at how successful you were at capturing the essence of the original
  • how you might advance the project further
