The specific form and joinery of components that make up these example projects allow rigid materials to move  in innovative ways. 

This structure was created at the MIT Media Lab as a collaboration between machines and nature. The initial structure was fabricated by the CNC machine, and then 6,500 silkworms were placed in the scaffolding to create a secondary formation that reflected how the silkworms responded to heat and light by forming pockets of differing densities.
