- MS is when your autoimmune system attacks your nerves and leads to paralysis, speech difficulty, and vision problems.
Forces in VR
I brainstormed 175 OI project and business ideas this summer in preparation for NuVu!
One idea stood out as fun, challenging, and impactful: simulating physical forces in virtual reality. I researched and designed solutions.
While these focused on broad use cases for VR, they also fully met the needs of E.L.I.!
A bad solution to the problem?

2 in 100 people live with paralysis
Paralysis has multiple causes:
- Autoimmune Diseases
- Physical accidents
- Cerebral Palsy
- Strokes
- & more
Many solutions exist today
nico you did most research here
Show what is done but what is bad about them in 3 sentence or less
EksoNR: rehab specific exo suit for the lower body.
Harmony: rehab exoskeleton for stroke patients' arms.
Myomo: exoskeleton restores arm functionality.
But are rehab focused, expensive, bulky

Harmony: for rehab only,
not long term functionality
Myomo: very expensive, bulky, not open source.
EksoNR: for leveled rehab only, not for home use
$36k - $65k pricetag!
E.L.I. restores arm functionality
E.L.I. restores arm movement and grip functionality for people with arm paralysis such as Nico's grandfather.
Functionality is restored from the elbow to the hand, enabling lower arm movement and providing a gripping device near the hand.
Users feel more in control, with boosted confidence and improved quality of life.
A good solution to the problem!

There are two key modules
Gripper Module
Arm Movement Module
The gripper went through many iterations
We looked into a few first ideas:
Mechanical
Iris
Soft robotics
We took different parts of these and created our next prototype
Pictured: a few of the many, many attempts to solve this problem
Fewer arm iterations, many details to solve

Next is user testing and the design
- We want to test our project with Nico's Grandfather
- We need to hide the cables and tighten the straps
