Fluvial Florator
Riverine planter bot for erosion control
Thesis Statement
Fluvial Florator is a boat robot that floats down streams or rivers with selected banks which are at risk of erosion and shoots seeds which grow into plants with thick root systems to help lock the bank soil together and reduce bank erosion. This could be employed in places where bank erosion is threatening small bridges or other structures.
The erosion of stream banks can cause a number of problems for people who live nearby to them, including:
- Destabilizing the base of bridges
- Lower water quality due to increased sediment
- Eventually changing the course of a river
- Causing the banks to be dangerous to walk on
Vegetation has been shown to have a positive impact of the stability of streambanks, though measuring the effects is complicated and difficult.
