Disaster Relief Robots (ADVANCED @ MIT)

Saba Ghole

*ADVANCED STUDIO - Recommended for High School Students, Post-High School Gap Year Students and/or Returning NuVu Students*

The Earthquake in Haiti, Hurricane Katrina, and the Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami focused the world’s attention on the massive destruction that emerges from natural disasters. The sites of these major natural disasters - fiery acres of remote forest, earthquake-shattered cities, tornado-ravaged towns, and contaminated nuclear plants - typically prove extremely dangerous for humans. When conditions are too perilous, robots can take a leading role - coming to the rescue in life-threatening situations.

This studio will put you in the front lines of creating robots for disaster relief and recovery! We’ll explore the technologies that are changing the way we deal with unexpected disasters and how robots can extend our ability to see, survey, and send aid in perilous areas. Students will look at equipping their robots with cameras, microphones, sensors, and other technologies that can provide critical data and information for responders and even provide direct aid (food and medical) to victims. Students will learn the basics of electronics and microcontrollers, while delving deep into computer programming that will allow their robots to make decisions and function autonomously in any given environment, especially one of a large disaster. Get ready to build the next generation disaster relief robot!
