Carroll School
When I was in third grade, I was diagnosed with dyslexia. After that, I went to Carroll School, which is a school for dyslexic kids, from fourth grade all the way to eighth grade
My time at Carroll allowed me to learn with my dyslexia and grow as a student through a community that understood my brain
My Story
When I was applying to high school, I experienced assumption. My interviewer's son had dyslexia, and because he struggled, my interviewer believed I would too.
This made me want to help people understand that a person's experience with dyslexia can be entirely different from the person sitting next to them
Local Agents of Change Work
Conceptual, technical, and visual
- Figuring out how to turn my "want" into a product
- Trying to keep my idea inside the depths of my factual knowledge
- Finding a way to make my project reach the community
Brainstorming in LAOC
Some of my brainstorming writing in LAOC
1
Brainstorm
My Personal Narrative

Write my Narrative
Incorperating Carroll into my Project
Carrolls Involvment
I always knew I wanted to bring Carroll in on my project, and just needed to figure out how.
- Interviewed teachers and asked them questions that would relate to my writing
- Used quotes from our interview in my writing like evidence
- Example: I struggled with comprehension (Carroll quote about why)

Brainstorming Questions
- Started writing questions for my personal narrative interview
- Structured my questions to follow a "story" format
- Made sure I would leave the interview with all the information I needed

Narrative Interview
Writing the Story
- After my interview, I reviewed the transcript
- I turned the transcript into the outline for the narrative
- Then wrote the actual narrative
- Added Carroll quotes like I did in my narrative
5
Write their Narrative
1) Get my project on Carroll's social media to reach a broader audience
2) Actually conduct the interviews with the people who filled out my form
3) Actually write the personal stories after the interviews and get them posted on NuVu News
Themes I have Noticed/Reflection
Themes in the project

The NuVu News Website:
Thank You!
I have experienced assumptions because of my dyslexia. People assume it is a "one size fits all" situation, when in reality it is heavily individual. My goal with my project is to help people see and understand how different someone with dyslexia's experience can be from the person sitting next to them, and to learn to see it with empathy. Assumption is dangerous because it generalizes and belittles individuals. One in five kids in the US alone has dyslexia. We must allow them to tell us their stories before we assume. My project helps give them a voice. My project is a series of personal stories about people — including myself —who have dyslexia. The goal of this project is to show the range of experiences people have and to help people see just how different they are. By making these personal stories, I am allowing my community to keep its voice while using me as a way of reaching a broader audience. These projects will be posted on NuVu News as well as on the Carroll School's, a school for dyslexic students, social media.
