Image and Line Exercise

Rima Das

Step 1: Choose your favorite mural from those we looked at yesterday. Printed pictures are available and digital pictures are in the Resources tab.

Step 2: Translate the photo into a 2D drawing made from only a series of individual lines. Every line should be straight and drawn with a ruler or other straightedge.

Step 3: Think about how to determine what to draw and not draw. What are the most important features? How many lines do you need in order to convey meaning? Think about particular elements of the photo that you want to explore: color, shadow, light, texture, shape, pattern, etc.

Step 4: Create three different 2D translations of the photo: begin by creating a detailed drawing with 100+ lines, then one with 20-30 lines, and then one with 5 lines. View the example images with this post.

Documentation Prompt: Scan and post all of your drawings to the Response Tab. How did you choose what lines to draw and what not to draw in each version of your drawing?
