Often consumed by day to day activities and distracted by visual stimulation, people miss noticing the sound that is constantly present around us. Whether it is created from natural or synthetic sources, whether it is the voice of others speaking, of the wind making its way through tree leaves, or the engine of a moving vehicle, sound is a significant part of our perception of the environment we are immersed in. Each source of sound has its own emotional implications, music is just one example of humans immersing in sound as a primary focus, and musical tracks themselves are composed of a variation of sounds, often entirely synthetic and abstract. It is the sequence that creates the immersive experience, allowing a mere few minutes of assembled sounds to tell a powerful story.

Students in this studio will observe the soundscapes we exist in and create their own. Beginning with an inspiring narrative, students will look for ways to translate ideas and emotions into sound tracks. They will use phonetics, performative sounds, natural and fabricated sound effects, and recorded sounds occurring in their general surrounding. Sound making will be used to communicate thoughts, identify a place, and generate a story line. Student will bring their stories to life through the immersive soundscapes they create, which will culminate in an audible performance at the end of the studio.
