Today, we finished the water filtering system which started on Monday. We glued the bubble wrap onto the foam board so the water would go through while the trash stays inside.
Henry and I made the outer part of the boat and created a ramp inside so that the trash can get follow the current and get into the boat. We made a hole to put in the water filter in the back. Besides, we are planning to make an extra floor in the top in order to use the boat as not only an ocean trash boat but also a tour boat where people can enjoy their time.
Today, I asked Mr. Jones for some ideas and together, we came up with a second sketch. We applied the concept of a lobster trap and a whale's water filtering system into our design. If we apply the same mechanism into our boat, we will be able to keep a pile of trash in place and filter out the water that came with it. We also added a compaction system that is powered by solar panels in order to compact the collected trash into bricks or smaller pieces.
Today, we officially started prototyping based on our second sketch. Since we are building a boat and we don't have any access to plastic materials, we decided to use foam boards. We cut off two trapezoid shaped pieces for the rear and two rectangular pieces for the bottom and back. Eventually, we glued the pieces together and on top of that, we also spray painted them in light blue. It was a good day of work and we got a lot of things done.
Today, Grant and I were assigned the topic of Environment as our Nuvu project and we have decided on the topic of ocean trash. We wanted to create a water vessel that is able to collect ocean/lake/river trash in small or medium sizes. We also did a lot of research on the precedents and the mechanisms we may use for the project. A sketch was drawn to express our idea and we thought about making a prototype in a few days.
