The City of Cypher

Day 2 - Solidifying the Plot

Today my group and I worked on solidifying the details of our game. We decided that Cypher City would have four main quadrants as well as a city center in the middle. The game is going to involve some puzzle solving, such as finding a key to unlock a door, flipping a switch, etc. The four sectors will be Residential (main color is orange), Tech (main color is blue), Commercial (main color is yellow), and Medical (main color is pink). The city center will be very white. Today I began working on the three dimensional map of the city. I am going to create several blocks of city space, and then copy and paste the segments to combine to create a larger, explorable map. Today I tried to create a three dimensional model in Maya of the main character, M.A.B., although I got confused and I had no idea what to do, so now Evan is going to work on making the three dimensional model.

Once M.A.B. will be dropped in the city center, right outside the capitol building, M.A.B will find the door to the city's control panel is locked with a four letter passcode. The player will be told by Jason Ivey (the scientist) that there is one piece of the passcode in each sector of the city. The player has the choice to go to any of the four sectors of the city. The four sectors are residential, commercial, medical, and technological development. Each sector also has its own color that the background will have with many different neon lights. In addition, M.A.B.’s lights will switch to that sector's color as well. The colors of each sector are orange for residential, yellow for commercial, pink for medical, blue for tech, and white for central. M.A.B. will be sent through each sector going threw a few puzzles and such to find a letter, and will be guided by Jason Ivey and his own intuition due to having an A.I. implanted. Every sector will have around 5 puzzles that are the same type of puzzle that all need to be solved in order to receive that sector's part of the passcode. Once the player solves all puzzles in the four sectors and is now in the central sector, it will need to solve more puzzles to be able to put the passcode in. Eventually Leonard Cypher will also be patched into the communication with M.A.B. Leonard was the old mayor of The City of Cypher (Cypher is who the city was named after), as well as the owner of most of the cities factories and industries, and thus Jason's boss. After finishing all of the puzzles in the center tower, M.A.B. will make it to the room with the system that will make the atmosphere good for humans again. However there are two buttons. An orange one, that we are told by Cypher will clear up the atmosphere and put all of the factories back to work, and a blue one, that Jason says will restore the atmosphere, and destroy the majority of the tech and factories in the city, including M.A.B. Cypher encourages M.A.B. to press the orange button, but Jason says that if he does, they will soon just be back in the same position they are in now. He then suggests that M.A.B. presses the blue button, so that he can save humanity forever, not just for a few years but will sacrifice himself. It is then up to the player to decide which button to press which is the end of the game.

These are our five reference pictures for how we will be creating the city. White is the center, yellow is commercial, orange is residential, pink is medical, and blue is technical.

Because of a new wave of interest in technological advancement starting in the late 2120’s the human race began pouring more and more money, resources, and manpower into many of the STEM subjects, with many people leaving fields in the humanities and manual jobs such as farming. Thanks to this change in mentality, over the last twenty years that humanity was on Earth, technological advancement was rampant, while everything else, including food production and environmental safety, was quickly dwindling, leading to the evacuation of Earth to an orbiting space station in 2141. In the year 2142, the first expedition into the city of Cypher, a team of human volunteers was sent down to activate a system in the capital building that would help clear the polluted atmosphere of Earth. However, the air of the planet was more polluted than previously thought, being toxic to most organic life, leading to the deaths of all members of the team. Now, in the year 2146, roughly fives years after the evacuation, the second mission to the planet below is being sent. This expedition would use a mechanical operative, instead of human ones. The machine will be a  M.A.B., or Mechanical Assistance Bot, originally designed to be a sort of “nanny bot”. It has been repurposed for use in this mission, and will be controlled remotely from a station. However, Jason Ivey, one of the main developers of the M.A.B. back on Earth, and the man who would be controlling the M.A.B., implanted a more advanced A.I. into the M.A.B. so that it could solve problems from the ground more efficiently than Jason could solve from space. He could also use it to test the new A.I. he had developed. And so, with its new A.I., the M.A.B., perhaps the human race’s last chance of survival, will soon be sent to the planet down below to hopefully make our home safe for life once again.

First Day

We have our theme, character, and city style now. If there's anything you feel the need to do at home, just let the group know so that we know what to expect when we come back in. Great work today.

Exploration-based

Cyberpunk-AI theme

Character: Mechanical-Assistance-Bot (MAB) A self-aware robot designed for every day assistance of humans (think nanny-bot). Humanoid (two arms, two legs, torso, one head), metal chasis, dome-faceplate, neon sea-green lining, (think-tron meets total recall soldiers) white metal plating.

City: Cypher, Cyberpunk themed, totally abandoned. MAB is the only known inhabitant. Lots of trash, broken lights, burned out lights, faint music coming from abandoned clubs.
