Fashion Forward

Saba Ghole

In the not-so-distant future, we’ll be heading to Mars. Futurists are teaming up with researchers and engineers to design the structures that will support us once we land. The imagined experiences and spaces on Mars read like scenes from The Martian, but during the long journey to Mars, what will we be wearing? When you’re out of your space activity suit and chilling on the space deck, what will be the fashion? This summer, students will be working with time traveling explorers to create fashion wearables for their journey to Mars. We’ll experiment with fabrics that come alive with color upon a user’s touch; clothing that alters its shape based on external light; headgear that produces sound based on the user’s movements. The studio will be capped by a choreographed runway show, Fashion Forward to Mars, where all the fashion pieces will make their premier!

Using the combined power of digital design (computer aided drafting, 3D modeling) and rapid prototyping tools (laser cutters and 3D printers), students will create high-tech fashion pieces inspired by futuristic journeys. We’ll combine new technologies (microcontrollers, LEDs, fiber optics, sensors, motors) to introduce fantasy, futurism, and functionalism into everyday life in outer space. Get ready to time travel and move Fashion Forward!
