Augmented Reality Futures

Augmented Reality Futures 2020

Jenny Kinard

Session 3: Aug 3-14, 2020

There’s really nothing like Augmented Reality (AR). It’s a technology where the goal is to fool the user into questioning what’s real and what’s digital. Right now AR can be experienced by wearing a headset, using your phone, or watching a projection overlaid on a scene. Current technological trends point to increasing connectivity to devices and concurrent isolation from our surroundings. In the future, we might find ourselves conversing with a friend while simultaneously and secretly watching youtube videos of cats. Instead of increasingly isolating us, how can we instead use AR to bring us closer to each other, the urban fabric, and even nature? This summer, let’s propose projects that do just that!

In this studio, you will work with experts in art and augmented reality and the area around MIT and Kendall Square will be your experimental 3D space.  With the year 2030 as your fourth dimension, we’ll look at the ways in which you can use AR to increase your connection with people, the environment, and ecologies through projection or phone-based interactive art installations, games, and more.

Using ARKit, programming, and the multimedia creation tool Unity3D, we will create interactive installations or games that are on the absolute cutting-edge of design. Students will learn fundamental architectural design skills including drawing, physical modeling, and representation to dream up installations along with the 3D modeling skills to represent their ideas.
