Future Augmented Reality 2019

Future Augmented Reality

Saba Ghole

A walk down the street in an imagined future will feel like an immersive TV commercial, with augmented pop-ups appearing on our digital contact lenses that are customized to our shopping habits and preferences. These advertisements will rule the urban landscape and we might be happy with this added layer of information or simply overwhelmed and disconnected. What if we could harness the power of Augmented Reality as a vehicle for change and not only commerce? What if our devices could project a future overlaid onto reality where things are different, and even better?

In this studio, we will explore Augmented Reality (AR) as a tool for imagining the future. What if an AR experience was designed to show the buildings that will replace a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood? Or how does a seawall built to protect a city under threat from rapid sea level rise not feel like a barrier? Or what will the floating housing blocks look like that will populate that neighborhood once those sea walls break? Using AR we can augment the experience of our environment, bring to life social injustices, or make real time commentaries on our urban landscape. In this studio, we will use technology for a purpose - to activate our opinions so they stand out in the sea of information, letting our voices rise up!

Using ARKit, programming, and the multimedia creation tool Unity3D, we will create full scale installations that are on the absolute cutting-edge of design. Students will learn fundamental architectural design skills including drawing, physical modeling, and representation to dream up installations along with the 3D modeling skills to represent their ideas.
