Design for Dystopia

Studio Intro

Jiyoo Jye

A rainy planet where the sun shines only for a day. A birthday party where magical creatures give up their most valued possessions. A rumbling and growling black Friday where bodies fall. Welcome to Design for Dystopia, where we navigate past the unpleasantries of these tales and look into ways to address and combat them!

In this studio, we will design wearables inspired by literature that explore dystopia and the protagonists that exist within these compelling narratives. Ranging from Ray Bradbury's All Summer in a Day to Kij Johnson's Ponies to Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenya's Friday Black, we will delve into the world of these characters and assess the problems that they face. Through a series of brainstorming and reading analysis, we will develop ideas around wearables that can address these complex issues.

Learning Goals:

  1. Reflect and analyze each short story in depth through a series of guided reading response questions and activities.
  2. Brainstorm potential strategies for combating and working through these challenging and complex obstacles in the stories.
  3. Develop an idea for how solutions can be framed within a wearable/ wearable device.
  4. Prototype and test out your design across scales, incorporating new skills and technology.
  5. Represent your work through rigorous documentation and clear communication of your ideas.
